About the Author

Thomas Charles Grant was born in Cowra, New South Wales on 6 April 1913. He joined the Forestry Commission of New South Wales in 1937 as a Forester and served in that capacity at Dorrigo, Coffs Harbour, Casino, Kempsey, Urbenville and Kyogle. In 1947 he was promoted to Senior Forester and was transferred to Casino. Mr Grant was promoted to District Forester for the Glen Innes District in 1952 and became District Forester for the Sydney District in 1960. He was transferred to the Head Office in 1968 and became the Assistant Resources Officer then Resources Officer in 1969, Land Classification Officer in 1971, and Deputy Chief of the Lands Administration Division in 1972. Mr. Grant retired from the Forestry Commission in 1978.

The author had a lifetime career with the Forestry Commission and was highly regarded by everyone he knew. His dedication to the cause of forestry and forest conservation has had great benefit to the State of New South Wales for without the appropriate laws and true conservation minded individuals with the power to dedicate, conserve and control the natural forest estate as either as State Forests, National Forests, Timber Reserves, Forest Reserves, Flora Reserves or National Parks we would not be in the enviable position of having the considerable areas of natural forest we have today.

Tom Grant knew the forest estate of NSW as well as anyone. The task of ensuring it's future was paramount to him whether it was taking decisive action to reserve a unique area or to spend countless hours protecting it from bushfire or to ensure that logging was done in a sustainable manner.
