Rules of Training


Listed are the rules of training that apply to all members of our dojo. Please follow them carefully.

1. Karate is an art of self-defence and should only be used as a last resort in the defence of oneself or in the defence of others.

2. All students must follow the protocol of bowing when entering and leaving the dojo, when training with other students, before and after the practice of Kata and kumite and when addressing any instructor or Sensei.

3. All students must wear the correct Karate uniform at all times. Jacket, pants, belt and T shirt. Shoes can be warn if permission is given by the instructor.

4. Personal cleanliness is expected. A clean Karate uniform, body, short finger and toe nails, hair out of eyes and no jewellery.

5. Punctuality is essential. Try not to be late. If students are late they must wait on the edge of the training area until they are invited to join. When invited to join the student must give their apologies and the reason for being late.

6. All students must pay training fees and have their attendance card stamped at training session.

7. Permission from the instructor is required to leave class during training.

8. All students should get changed as soon as possible and should be on the training area practicing Karate or warming up.

9. If the instructor is occupied then it is the role of the most senior student to take warm ups.

10. Permission must be sought from the Sensei if visiting students wish to train from other martial art organizations.

11. If you are absent from class, please inform the instructor of your reason of absence. Failure to do so will prevent you from being graded to your next level.

12. Talking is forbidden during class except when the instructor allows a minimal amount for discussion.

13. During all training sessions all students are expected to train with total commitment, courtesy and care.

14. No contact must be made during kumite at all times.

15. All students must provide their own protective equipment at all times. Eg hand mitts and shin guards

16. Protective must be worn at all times during free sparring.

17. If you have an injury or illness or become injured during training you must report this to the Sensei at once. No student will be allowed to train with any amount of blood coming from their body or a wound unless it is covered by a dressing or has stopped.

18. Upon entry into the dojo of any instructor from another club, any high grade will call the class to attention by shouting "SENSE1 IN THE DOJO"; at which everyone will immediately stop what they are doing and face the door. After performing a bow the class will recommence.

19. If any student has a problem with the behaviour of a fellow student you are encouraged to bring this matter up with a senior student or the Sensei.

Discipline Procedures.

Bad etiquette, poor discipline or behaviour contra to the rules of training will not be tolerated at any time. A system of warnings is in place whereby:

· First warning verbally.

· De-ranking and a ban from the club for a period of time.

Any student or instructor found to be in breach of the rules of training by the Sensei, will be discharged.

Grading and Rank Guidelines.

The following criteria applies to all grading conducted by Washin School of Martial Arts.

· Only the Sensei determines when students can undertake their next grading. If you wish to apply for a grading an appointment must be made with Sensei.

· Gradings are only conducted under the authority of the Sensei.

· Grading requirements apply to all current members of the club.

· If students do not attend training for 3 months without prior approval from the Sensei, their rank will be revoked.

· If students wish to retain their rank, a leave of absence e can be negotiated with the Sensei.

· If students wish to recommence their training they, will be awarded a rank to match their skill and fitness level until they have achieved a standard equal to their old rank.

· Students with previous martial arts experience will be ranked at White Belt until they have gained skill, knowledge and fitness, which is equal to a rank determined by the Sensei.

· Gradings are to be viewed as a privilege not a right. It is only up to the Sensei to determine if you, or anyone else, can participate in a grading. Gradings are only earned through dedication, regular attendance, correct attitude and hard work.

· Approval must be sought from the Sensei if any student wishes to learn another martial art system.

· Promotion through the ranks is awarded on an individual basis, based on knowledge of technique, level of performance and attitude towards training. Only with regular attendance and hard work promotion is obtained.
