Fraser Island
Fraser Island, or the Great Sandy Island, is
about 120 km long and 24 km wide at its widest
point and is the largest sand island in the
world. It is close to the southeastern coast of
Queensland, Australia. The Island is dotted
with many fresh water lakes and sandblows and
supports a diverse flora including Angiopteris
fern, palms and satinay trees. In the 1920's
the Island supplied logs of satinay treees for
the construction of the Suez Canal. In 1993 Dot
and I spent 6 days on the island. We walked in the
southern part of the Island between some of its
many sandblows and fresh water lakes (some stained
by organic matter and some crystal clear).
One day we drove about 60 km along the
Seventy-Five Mile Beach to Indian Head one of
only four rocky outcrops on the island.
