| Stud Master: Phillip Russell Our flock currently has a mature ewe base of approximately 120 ewes, reduced in number due to the continuing dry seasonal conditions. We are currently joining 60 ewe lambs to maintain our sale ram numbers, enabling us to sell 80 - 90 rams per year. Our goal is to produce the best maternal genetics available to the prime lamb industry, and we have been working towards this goal for 32 years. We usually wean 160% lambs and are aiming to wean 200%. We have a set criteria on type and performance and any ewe not reaching these criteria is culled. We cull any ewe - not rearing a lamb - not showing good temperament and docility at lambing - not producing good weaned lambs. Ewe lambs are culled at a rate of 45 to 65%, leaving a select group to add to the flock each year. We believe that the best ewe for the prime lamb industry is of moderate mature size and possesses the ability to produce and wean triplet lambs. Our flock has a multiple birth rate of 75%, with 33% of these being triplets. All ewes rear their lambs in the paddock and now we find our maidens rear triplets with no trouble or assistance. We have focussed on milk and fertility and have been and will continue to use Lambplan to monitor the improvement of these two traits while continuing to improve other desirable traits such as weaning weight, post weaning weight, fat depth and eye muscle depth. We are using A.I. to enable us to benchmark our flock against others within the breed (with Lambplan's help) and also to benchmark our home bred sires. |
