Each year a Sweatbox Art exhibition is held in Wentworth, NSW This popular show attracts many interesting entries. (Wentworth Shire)
If you have never lived in a fruit drying area you may wonder what a sweat box really is. The boxes were used to transport sultanas, currants and raisins from the fruit blocks to the processing factories.
In 2006 I made the Aurora Desk to show at the exhibition. Eight of the sweatboxes were loaded onto my ute to bring back to the shed to dismantle.
What a job. These weathered boxes had seen years of use (and abuse) and most have been nailed, renailed and nailed again. An interesting digression is the types of nails used which create a potted history of nail types. I filled a bucket with them. Some were rusty and some were still galvanised. Those injected by nail gun were the worst to remove.
