The beginning We had told our neighbor that we were looking to get a puppy but we hadn’t really decided what to get. Rick liked kelpies and I like cattle dogs. He called us one Friday afternoon to tell us that a guy he worked with had a litter of Kelpie x Cattle dogs for sale for $10 each and would we be interested in having a look. Rick rung me at work and asked if I wanted to have a look at the litter, so I left work early and off we went. Taylor was part of a litter of nine, ? males ? females. We were only allowed to pick a girl because the boys were all taken. She was the only black bitch in the litter and one of her brothers was also black but he had a white mark on his face. When we first looked at the litter I immediately was taken by ‘the black one’. Rick liked another female that was very full on. So after about an hour we separated the two girls from the litter so we could choose between them. Well I think Taylor must have realised what was going on so she turned up the heat and was all over the other female and Rick said I think well take the black one. As we walked out the door we decided to call her Taylor. As Taylor began to grow we started to think that maybe there was another breed in her and after further questioning of her ‘breeder’ we found out that her mother was actually a kelpie x dingo. As you can see she doesn’t have a lot of cattle dog in her. Taylor went to puppy school at 12 weeks and was the star of her class. She would be the one to get all the puppies playing and then come back to us to get down to work. It was here that we met our first dog trainer, Donna. After seeing how clever (we weren’t that biased) Taylor was we decided we wanted to do some more training with Taylor and Rick suggested Dog Agility and Donna suggest we go and see the Agility Dog Club of NSW which held classes on Thursday nights. So Taylor started her Agility Training at 6 months of age. About two years later we started private training with Liz Barker (White) and we continued to train for about three years. Taylor started trailing when she was 18 months old. She obtained her JD title in May 2002. However it took three years to get her AD. During this time we had the pleasure of meeting and attending Susan Garrett from Canada and Greg Derrett from England seminars. After attending these seminars I retrained Taylor’s contacts over the Christmas of 2003, because of this in 2004 Taylor gained her ADX and JDM and 5 passes from 5 runs of the seven she required for her ADM. 2005 In the beginning of 2005 Taylor gained 1st place in Master Agility at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and this was her sixth pass towards her ADM. This win was one of the most memorable moments of our partnership to date. 2005 was a big year for Taylor she completed her ADM 9 runs for seven clear. We got the final passes for her ADAA Game Dog title and her final passes for her MAAD title to complete her ADAA AAC title. Taylor also qualified for the ANKC Agility Dog of the year final in Agility and Jumping. So with all of that out of the way what we do next… I’ll keep you posted. 2006 Well I still can’t believe it but Taylor has done it again… Winning Master Agility at Sydney Royal Easter Show. The only dog to ever win this event back to back… and considering I was 20 weeks pregnant I was thrilled with the result. I hadn’t expected it as I had only run Taylor at one trial since Dec 2005 due to morning sickness and then wrapping myself in cotton wool until I was at least 14 weeks into the pregnancy. Rick will be running her at the ANKC Agility Nationals in June. It’s going to be really hard to sit on the sideline but my lung capacity isn’t good enough for me to do her justice. Taylor did well at the Nationals and despite trying to tell her father what he should do, they managed four quallie's but no finals... but they had a ball together. With a new baby in the house Taylor is still Mummy's girl and a guardian to Kyla. 2007 7.01.07 I look forward to trialing this year and considering I am chasing no titles I think Taylor and I are just going to be able to trial because we can... it will be our time together. |
