Pregnancy Diary

In November 05 during our trip to Weipa I finally accepted that Rick and I were probably just meant to have a life looking after dogs. I have some issues with IVF so I wasn’t prepared to go down that road just yet… but was finally happy with my lot in life… house (plans ready for renovation), great husband, great dogs, great family including great in-laws and of course great friends...

Rick and I had been really sick over Christmas with a Summer flu and were both on antibiotics. Mine seem to be making me feel really nauseas so I went to see the chemist about changing the brand or getting something to take the nausea away… he suggested I take a pregnancy test… I laughed in his face… the test was positive… I’m going to be a Mum… oh crap... I don't mean that in a bad way...

January 2006

10.01.06

On the 10th of January 2006 we found out that we were expecting our first child… this was unexpected as I have PCOS so while we had wanted children we had never expected it to actually happen.

We were both really excited with the news except that is meant selling our beloved Landcruiser 75 series Ute, putting of the upsizing of our boat and canceling our annual fishing trip to Weipa… may as well get use to the changes now.

12.01.06

If I could just stop driving this porcelain bus every hour I could start to get excited. Our blood tests came back today confirming a positive result… now how did that happen again???

20.01.06

Been sick on and off every day but hey. Today we went to have our first ultrasound to make sure I wasn’t having an ectopic pregnancy. The ultrasound was perfect… the little one couldn't be in a better position… I think it’s about 1.5 cm long but its heart is already beating at 160 BPM. Rick is very proud of himself.

It was unplanned but we managed to catch up with all of Rick's family except for my sister-in-law Fiona and so we were able to tell them all together our news… there were tears all round. We were supposed to be the ones with dogs.

21.01.06

We told my Mum and Dad today… I was a bit naughty and told them that we had gone to see an ultrasound of our new puppy yesterday but not to worry because it wouldn’t be arriving till September… it took a moment for Mum to do the sums and was really funny but it was tears all round for them as well.

I rang my brothers and they were really excited. Brett (my eldest brother) couldn't stop laughing and I think he may have wet the baby’s head that night. My other brother Mark (I always call him my younger brother even though he is older than me) already new… not because anyone told him it was just intuition.

February 2006

7.02.06

We met with our obstetrician today. We really like him. We also got to see another ultrasound and we could see little hands and arms’ waving around… oh it was very cool.

9.02.06

Had a blood sugar test today. Results were great!

17.02.06

Nausea seems to have gone… yee haa

23.02.06

We had our 12-week ultrasound today to test for downs. Our little one is starting to really look like a human. We saw it actually tasting the amniotic fluid and it was waving its arms around.

The tests were all fine I am in low rang so we are not doing any further tests.

March 2006

3.03.06

I know it’s supposed to be not possible but I felt a distinct bump last night.

14.03.06

Met with our Doctor again today and met the midwife. Not sure if she will be our midwife… guess we’ll find out later.

We heard the babies heart beat today… it reminded me of a galloping horse. Rick was there with a big smile on his face.

27.03.06

Well we sold our Landcruiser today (we brought a 2005 Hilux last week) and I cried my eyes out when I changed to number plates over.

I’m blaming the hormones from the pregnancy but dame we had some great memories in that ute!

April 2006

1.04.06

Judged my last comp today until after I have bub. Really enjoyed it.

2.04.06

I stayed at Liz ’s last night with a few of the girls and we had a great time…

Got to run Taylor and Buster today for the first time since Dec 05 and had a ball. No quallies but Taylor was off her face but was actually listening to me.

7.04.06

We had our 18-19 week ultrasound today and checked that all the hands and feet and bits were in the right places. Don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl we didn’t want to find out.

When we were looking at the hands we got a thumbs up from bub and I can only take that as a good sign… it was really funny and Rick and I were both laughing and the baby was getting bumped around because of my laughing which made us laugh more.

It reminded Rick of the final scene in Terminator II when Arnie is being lowered into the hot metal and give a thumbs up as he goes in.

Scan was fine.

18.04.06

Ran Taylor at Sydney Royal today and she won Master Agility… God I love that dog. She was an angel. I cried… must be the hormones.

May 2006

1.05.06

Rick felt bub move tonight… I loved the look on his face. I think we are in for a soccer player…

2.05.06

Boy is this pregnancy going fast. Bub is really kicking now even though Rick only felt it last night.

Saw the doctor again today all is fine and I’m just starting to show a bit… as apposed to just looking like I am putting on weight!

6.05.06

Mum got to feel bub move this afternoon. Its was only light but she could feel it.

14.05.06

Jacqui and Christopher got to feel bub kicking. I couldn’t tell who was more excited.

15.05.06

Mothers Day weekend took a lot out of me and I think bub is really having a growth spurt as I had to go home from work early today because I was just so tired.

23.05.06

It’s Melissa’s 5th birthday today and all she wanted from me was to feel the baby move. It’s really quite today so I hope she gets her wish.

28.05.06

Melissa really got to feel the baby move I seem to have put some sides on my belly in 5 days… I’m guessing that’s why it was quite during the week. It’s not quite now and in fact had me awake at 5.30 this morning… suppose I should get used to that!

June 2006

10.06.06

Well the Agility Nationals were held today and boy did I hate standing on the sideline. I also feel really selfish that I was disappointed for missing the Nationals but there are heaps of people out there that would love to be in my shoes. Well I guess I am human after all.

Taylor was a bugger for her Dad but the courses today were really average and quite disappointing considering what the event was there was nothing flowing about either course but that's agility.

13.06.06

Ok I now know where my syatic nerve is on the left side... got up to get ready for work, had a shower, dried myself, reached forward to get so cream and bam what the hell is that... kinda like wacking your funny bone but 10 times more intense.... owwww!

So lucky for me I have a great mother-in-law who managed to get me into my Chiro and Rick came home form work and took me (my father in-law would have if Rick could... I'm a lucky girl!) and it all feels much better now.

But I am not allowed to vacuum or clean... bugger... :)

14.06.06

Saw the Doctor today and he is very happy with me... 6.6kg total weight gain... I am wrapped.

July 2006

4.07.06

Went to have a look around the hospital today... and the labour room looked very clinical... strange when you think of it considering it is a hospital! Oh silly me... not quite sure what I expected but at least I now know.

Went to my doctors again today and my total weight gain is 7.5kg... cool... my blood pressure was great and Rick was given strict instructions that whatever he was doing to look after me he had to keep doing it because he was doing a great job!

9.07.06

I washed all of bub's clothes today... well 9 little 0000 Bonds suits and some socks and wraps... they looked really funny hanging on the line and Rick and I were both laughing at it... Taylor was trying to steal the little which socks... doesn't leave me much hope for the dummy's or toys.

15.07.06

Well with only 3 weeks left of work and baby class in two weeks time it's all becoming a bit real.

Bub is moving heaps and is quite strong when moving around. My belly can now appear a bit lop-sided which looks really funny.

I still feel really well though and don't feel heavy at all.

We picked up our pram today but we haven't got it out of the box yet... plenty of time for that.

August 2006

9.08.06

Finished work today... I'm a bit sad about it because I really liked my job and the people I worked with.

18.08.06

Feeling fine but I have basically slept all week...

September 2006

4.09.06

Due date.

5.09.06

Saw the doctor today... all is well but he doesn't expect anything to happen for another 3-4 days... he did say I could prove him wrong...

6.09.06

Well the day started normally... I saw Rick off to work and told him I was going back to bed for a little while because my back was a bit sore and I felt a little tired.

I spoke to my friend at about 8.00am and then Mum rang at 8.30am to check on me... and I told her she was game ringing me because I was usually still in bed asleep... anyway she was just checking on me because I had seen the doctor the day before... I said I was fine and told her about my plans for the day and hung up.

I was rolling around in bed to get some heat onto my back when I felt a pop... and I though to myself oh that felt really strange and within minutes I felt a trickle and realised what had happened so I jumped (army rolled) out of bed and got to the bathroom just in time for my water to fully break... I laughed my head off and Taylor came in to have a look and all but rolled her eyes and left the room... I was going to have my baby...

According to my phone records I rung Rick at 9.27am and I asked him where he was and told him he needed to get home because my waters had broken but not to rush because I wasn't having contractions or pains at all.

I rang Mum and told her she had better get Joshua's cake finished because my waters broke and she said I had a feeling that might happen... Mum's always know...

We left for the hospital and arrived at about 10.30am and I was having some slight pain but nothing serious... when we got in the room we put the camera's on charge and I started to walk around. The pain was only gradual but rhythmic but the midwife felt that I wasn't in labour and thought I should go home because I probably would go into labour spontaneously and the doctor would need to induce me the following morning... when she left the room I told Rick we weren't going anywhere... she came back in and suggested we go to the cafe and have some lunch and then head home after that...

So we headed down to the hospital cafe for lunch and by the time I had finished my lunch I had gone into labour so while Rick finished his lunch I started to pace the hospital grounds... and it took us half an hour to get back to our room...

A new midwife walked in and started to say ok now I believe you are heading home because you haven't gone into labour when she took one look at me and said oh I think you are now in labour maybe you would like to get into the shower... and so it began... 1.30pm

We had been in the shower for about 2 hours when Mum came in at around 3.30pm and she did a ring around to update everyone... at 4.30pm my doctor came in and said I was 1cm dilated, I then started to use the gas (which was great once I got into rhythm)... he said he would see me about 8.00pm and thought I would be around 6-7cm by then... we returned to the shower... when he came in at 8.00pm I was only 3cm... bugger... (it all gets a bit fuzzy after this)... when I was having contractions the babies heart rate started to drop so this started to become a concern... I was on the exercise ball while I was being monitored and my contractions were really strong and getting closer together... when he came in around 10.00pm I was only 3.5cm so he gave us three choices about what we could do (my contractions were really strong now, 90sec long and were only giving me 5sec intervals before the next one... the midwife kept on asking me if I needed to push, but unfortunately I wasn't there yet... we asked for his suggestion and I ended up having an emergency caesarean... when that epidural when in it was like heaven on earth...

We got the birth on video and it is just the best footage, you get to hear all the comments and the expression of joy and relief from Rick and I... if you want to see it let me know, it's not gory and you can't see any of my bits so don't worry!

Conclusion: I loved being pregnant and would do it all again tomorrow if you didn't have the responsibility of a baby at the end of it... don't get me wrong I love being a Mum but it is hard work.

Total weight gain 11.3kg (1.3kg in the last week)
