A-Z of Australian-Made Motorcycles
1893-1942
by Robert Saward
published by Turton and Armstrong

This is, without a doubt, the definitive work on the subject of Australian-made bikes. Robert Saward has collected together an enormous treasury of facts on these, generally, little-known bikes. The Australian Motorcycles web-page had information on just ten or twenty makes until I read this book, which contains details of just under four hundred (!) makes. The information for the thumbnail sketch on each make is, in most cases, derived from this book, with the permission of the author and publisher, for which I am very grateful.

As well as providing an encyclopaedic listing of Australian bikes, from makers of a single machine to those in business for over thirty years, this book is a very enjoyable read giving a clear picture of the nature of motorcycle manufacture in Australia in the early part of this century. The book is very well illustrated, mainly with period photographs, and has five appendices, including two particularly useful ones giving details of the proprietary parts from which so many machines were assembled.
