Bookies Dismiss Crows - August 20th 2001 - by Pablo

PUNTERS bracing themselves for a repeat of the nightmare of an Adelaide premiership need not worry.

''At best they are going to finish seventh or eighth. Then they have to win four sudden-death games away from home in which they are likely to be the outsiders,''

Adelaide is in peak form, looks set to make the eight and knows what it takes to win a flag, but the Crows' task is virtually impossible, according to the bookmakers. Centrebet has the Crows at $41 to win the premiership. TAB Sportsbet took some big bets on Adelaide last week and has tightened it to $21.

But Adelaide's form, non-existent injury list and finals history, the Crows look as fortbitable opponents for any interstate side facing them early in the finals.

McLeod for Brownlow - August 19th 2001 - by Pablo

ANDREW McLeod is on the verge of creating more history.

Now he is poised to add the most prestigious individual award, the Brownlow Medal, to his growing collection which includes a club best and fairest in '97 and 97' + 98' Norm Smith medals.

In the process he would become the first Crow to win the medal. With two rounds to go its believed the Brownlow is a two horse race -- McLeod ($5 in latest markets) versus Brisbane skipper Michael Voss ($3.50).

McLeod is a proven vote-getter, finishing third last year, and he oozed Brownlow-type class with 35 possessions in the Crows' demolition of the Kangaroos on Friday night.

Jarman set to retire says Andrew - August 17th 2001 - by Pablo

Jarman, 34, will ''definitely retire at the end of the season'', according to his brother, mentor and former teammate Andrew.

''I believe he'll definitely retire at the end of the season,'' Andrew Jarman said. ''I'm not putting words into his mouth, this is just my opinion. But I think he'll stop.

''It's not about the money. 'It's about the enjoyment and the commitment he has to make during the pre-season if he wants to play again and I don't know if he wants to do that. Darren's got three young kids (Emma, Kate and Ben) and he wants to spend more time with them and Sue (his wife). I think he wants to get into another chapter in his life. Down deep, I think he's lost the fire. What he's doing now is he's playing every game as if it's his last. He's saying, 'Stuff all the bull...., I'm going to enjoy whatever's left'.''

Ninth-placed Adelaide needs to win at least two of its remaining three matches to have any chance of making the finals.

Jarman has played 226 matches since joining Hawthorn from North Adelaide in 1991. He played 109 matches for the Hawks before switching to the Crows in '96.

He has played in three premierships, in '91 with Hawthorn and Adelaide in '97-98, and has been chosen in three All-Australian teams.

But, at his top, Jarman is still capable of competing with the AFL's elite as evidenced by his six-goal haul three weeks ago against Melbourne's Brownlow medallist Shane Woewodin and his four goals against Carlton's Stephen Silvagni last Saturday night.

Andrew Jarman, however, believes Jarman is ready to pursue life outside of the grind of an October pre-season and a body in decline.

''Darren's had a fantastic career, but I think he's ready to do something else now,'' Jarman said. He could pursue a role as an assistant coach, as a specialist forwards coach. He has already been doing that this season on his own with the Crows with young Scott Welsh, Ian Perrie and a few others. Or he could go back to the SANFL and play there for North for a couple of years and put something back in, which I think would be great, or he could take a complete rest from the game. I think there's a good chance he could end up being a horse trainer -- he loves horses and a punt -- and work with somebody like Micky Nunan (former North Adelaide and Fitzroy coach). There's no doubt he's still good enough to play again next year -- he's had a good year this year -- but I don't know if he wants to do another pre-season.''

''From an Essendon point of view, he's still a highly rated and highly respected opponent. You look at what happens most weeks. He gets the best defender.

Jarman comes out of contract at the end of the season and will soon reveal his intentions.
