Microchip problems?

There is a lot of misinformation about microchips out there.  All dogs and cats in NSW are supposed to be chipped and registered with the local Council before sale.  The new owners then get a form to change the registration to their local council in their name and address.  This is not the case in the ACT, where the system relies on yearly payment of registration and tags on the collar for dogs (cats are not registered).  Registering dogs is compulsory in the ACT, and this can be done on line conveniently at DAS.

Sadly, many people think that if their pet has a microchip that all will be fine if they get lost.  However owner information has to be entered on a national database for the system to work.  There are three commonly used databases (just to confuse the issue further!).  We enter our client’s pets on the Australian Animal Registry, all contact details are here, you can e-mail them, but you cannot update details on the web.  One of the others is the Central Animal Registry, who are set up to do detail changes on the web.  The third one is Petsafe, which is also web-user friendly.  Remember, the system only works if the database is kept up to date, so keep your address and phone numbers current.  Feel free to e-mail us if you have any questions.
