FAMILY FINANCIAL AFFAIRS

A plain English Guide for Australian Families

by N E Renton (Wrightbooks, 2001)

Family Financial Affairs

This book brings together in the one volume a number of topics of significance to Australian families generally, ranging from budgeting and investing to superannuation and pre-retirement planning.

There are also chapters dealing with aspects such as wills, powers of attorney, family trusts, housing, insurance, the use of borrowed funds, record keeping and unclaimed moneys.

Although many "do it yourself" and self-help books are available in bookshops none deals with the most important subject of them all - the family. This plain English guide seeks to fill this vacuum.

The book also contains a number of useful checklists, an extensive glossary of technical terms, a list of relevant Internet links and a detailed index.

Extract from the book:

A small boy who wanted $100 very badly prayed and prayed for two weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write a letter to God requesting the $100.

When the postal authorities received the letter addressed simply to "God, Australia" they decided to send it to the Prime Minister.

The PM was so impressed, touched, and amused that he instructed his secretary to send the boy a $10 note. The PM thought that this would appear to be a lot of money to the lad.

The small boy was delighted with the $10, and immediately sat down to write a thank-you note to God:

"Dear God

"Thank you for sending me the money.

"However, I noticed that for some reason you sent it through Canberra and as usual the government deducted 90 per cent."
