RENTON'S METAPHORS  (830 pages)

THE BOOK WHICH LEAVES NO STONE UNTURNED

Metaphors improve speech and writing by conveying shades of meaning more succinctly than ordinary phrases.

This fascinating book, now in its third edition, discusses the subject in some detail. An entertaining introduction leads into a dictionary of metaphors, a thematic section and a thesaurus.

It contains some 17,000 alphabetical entries listing over 4,000 different metaphors commonly found in current use and setting out their meanings in an easily read and popular style.

This handy word-book with its highly original format will appeal to all lovers of language, as well as to writers, editors, publishers, students, migrants and those engaged in public speaking.

Property Investments Stock Exchange Investments

UNDERSTANDING INVESTMENT PROPERTY (480 pages)

UNDERSTANDING THE STOCK EXCHANGE (764 pages - a real jumbo book)

Both of these best-selling titles, first published in 1989, are now available in updated and expanded Fourth Editions.

From the Foreword of the compehensive Stock Exhange book, by Professor Allan Fels AO, Dean, The Australia and New Zealand School of Government (formerly Chairman, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, 1995-2003):

"The book is a work of education written from an independent perspective. In other words, the author's motives in writing the book are educational and intended to explain to readers how the market works and what the advantages and disadvantages of taking particular courses of action are, rather than being an uncritical attempt to persuade people to buy shares willy nilly. Nor is it a `get rich quick' book. Rather, it is a guide for serious small investors that is also useful to many other kinds of readers.

"The Fourth Edition has been revised and brought up to date. Since the Third Edition [of 1998] there have been many changes to the market and to the legislation associated with it. There have been changes in corporations law and tax law and particularly notably there has been the Financial Services Reform Act. The author has made more reference to the Internet and to the successful prosecutions by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission in relation to corporate crime in recent years."

NICK RENTON'S 50TH BOOK PUBLISHED

PUBLIC RELATIONS: A MATTER OF SPIN

All companies and non-profit organisations have one important attribute in common: they have a need to communicate effectively with certain target audiences and they want to have a good image in the community.

Whether they recognise it or not they are constantly involved in public relations and government relations. This book shows them how to become more effective in these key areas.

Brian Hamley, the former Group General Manager and Chief Economist of the National Australia Bank, comments in his foreword: "This is a book not just for public relations or corporate affairs departments, but rather for the whole enterprise."

Good Writing

COMPENDIUM OF GOOD WRITING a style manual

To write well is one of the most desired skills ... to be illiterate is to be most severely handicapped - Alan Mahar

WHO NEEDS TO WRITE WELL?

This book is a manual for writers of all types, from students to professional authors. It will also appeal to wordlovers and it will help people for whom English is a second language.

The book is also intended as a serious management tool for the Australian business community. For this reason it includes many practical illustrations.

Most people will have been at the receiving end of letters or circulars from private sector companies or government agencies which involve poor spelling, incorrect punctuation, atrocious grammar and internal inconsistencies. Meaningless jargon, gobbledegook and other stylistic faults abound.

A READER SUMMED UP A COMMON PROBLEM AS FOLLOWS:

I was just correcting some copy for our newsletter. There was ongoing discussion between interested parties - for example, should numbers be spelt out or not? Commas here and there.

There was an obvious need for some standardisation, given that there were a number of different contributors, all with different styles of writing and different views in relation to formality, with the young tending to drop capitalisation and punctuation, and with others just relying on the fact that "somebody else will fix it".

So I got on the web and your book stood out as a "must get".

Income Tax

TAX SIMPLIFICATION (An extract from this important new book)

Only 28 years ago, in 1976 the tax return form used by Australian individuals with investment income was called "Form A" and consisted of a mere four pages. The instructions took up another four pages.

By 2001 the corresponding return form had trebled in size to 12 pages. However, the basic instructions in Tax Pack and its Supplement were now 204 pages long. In addition, Tax Pack referred users to a further 81 separate publications and rulings available from the Australian Taxation Office, covering further aspects which could not conveniently be fitted into the two main booklets.

And even more material can be found on the ATO web site.

Never mind the width, feel the quality.

Learn more about Shares

Discover many unexpected facts, such as how some investors manage to pay five different lots of fees for a single share purchase.

Learn more about Property

Read some surprising conclusions:

  • Is it better to own a house or to rent one?
  • Do shares or property make better investments?

  • Is DIY superannuation all that it is cracked up to be?

Learn more about Family Trusts & Ownership of Assets by Individuals, Partnerships, Companies and Trusts

This is a book for share and property investors and the owners of small businesses. It analyses the various alternative legal structures which should be considered.

This book complements the earlier work entitled Family Trusts, which explains in great detail how family trusts work and their taxation basis, and which analyses their advantages and disadvantages. The new book Learn more about Family Trusts & Ownership of Assets by Individuals, Partnerships, Companies and Trusts focuses more on the various legal structures which investors and businesses can use, because trusts are not the optimum solution for everybody.

From the Foreword by Paul Sheahan, Headmaster, Melbourne Grammar School:

"The author, Nick Renton, has been a long-time commentator on the financial scene (and broader issues) in Australia. How he had the energy and insight - quite apart from the clarity of expression - to write this, his latest treatise on a specific topic, defies description.

"His observations have been informed, occasionally pungent, rarely cryptic and highly valued by those who do not have the depth of understanding of the intricacies of financial planning that he has ...

"I recommend the book strongly; from my comparatively low- level vantage point with respect to financial knowledge, I found it not only very useful but also most enjoyable."

Hand

Learn more about Retirement Planning

As well as dealing with budgeting, investing, tax, social security and legal issues, this book discusses various lifestyle aspects, such as the use of leisure and the possibility of having a "second career" after retirement. The book also analyses housing options and retirement villages.

Two special chapters analyse the possible passing on of wealth to the next generation and how to work out a feasible retirement date.

From the Foreword by Erich Mayer, former CEO of National Mutual:

"This book is comprehensive: nothing of importance is left out and nothing irrelevant is included. It is even-handed, giving the arguments for and against particular courses of action. There is even room for humour in the superbly chosen chapter heading quotations and in the Tailpiece. Above all, it is written in a style that makes it easy for the reader to understand the most intricate of matters."

Journalism: Investigation & Research edited by Stephen Tanner (Longman, 2002)

This book contains a chapter by Nick Renton

From a recent book by Nick Renton:

A customer walked into a country grocery shop and bought the entire stock of eggs.

"Oh, I get it," said the grocer. "There is a meeting to protest against the GST being held tonight - and you are going to be in the audience."

"No," said the customer, "I'm the guest speaker."
