Layout Extension

I have been planning the extension of the layout for the past 12 months. The existing layout is limited by the length of the mainline and limited industry. I had always planned a larger layout but decided to build in stages to ensure the layout would not always be in construction stage.

I have been able to spend the past 12 months enjoying the existing layout while taking a break from construction. The new extension will double the length of the mainline and extend the yard/industrial line.

The operational capabilities of the layout has always been to enable mainline running whilst simultaneously  using the yard and industry for end to end operations. The addition of the through yard will enable storage of longer trains and mainline running between the through yard and interchange yard. The classification yard will be utilised for processing of trains for the  grain and paper industries.

Below is the final plan of the layout extension. to see the existing plan go to the layout plan page.

The extension continues on the right hand side wall of the layout room approx. 4 metres ( 14 feet) in length by 620mm (2 feet) in width although the loop extend to 1 metre (3 feet) wide.

Below is a picture of the wall I'm about to use for the extension. I intend commencing the bench work in March 2001 with the mainline operational by June 2001. The aim is to complete the mainline with all points to enable normal operation of the layout. I will add the through yard and industries once the mainline is fully wired.
