Control

The layout is wired with two cab controls, this allows one cab to operate the mainline while the second cab operates the yard or both cabs can control the mainline. The track is wired using a common rail with insulfrog points.

The control panel faceplate is made from perspex (plexiglass) then the tracks were masked with tape and painted. There are 3 types of switches, block switches which select the cab control, switches to operate the points and switches to operate the signals. When the signals are at stop a section of track is electrically isolated approaching the signal allowing the train to come to a stand at the signal. To operate the points the switch is operate normal or reverse then a pushbutton pressed to throw the points.

The panel is wired using twin speaker wire for the controls and 10amp single cable for track wiring. Tri-polar LEDs have been used to indicate position of points and the condition of all signals. The points and signals are operated through a 24 volt relay to enable the system to be automated once track detection is installed.

The relay rack has points detection relays and signal control relays. The additional relays will be used once a track detection system is installed.
