MR. SIDNEY T. DERRICK.
In the death of Mr Sidney T. Derrick, which occurred at his home
in High Street on Sunday morning, 15th September, Lancefield has lost
one of the oldest, best known and most highly regarded citizens.
He was a son of the late William and Hannah Derrick, and he was
the eldest of fourteen children, of whom six sisters and four
brothers survive him.
He was born at Kew 84 years ago, and came with his parents to
Lancefield at the age of five years. His early days were spent at the
Lancefield State School, where the Methodist Church now stands, and
he later attended Scotch College.
His first business experience was in association with his father
in conduct of the post office and store during the period when the
railway line to Lancefield was being constructed. He later opened the
hardware and timber business in Raglin street, which he conducted for
fifty years until his retirement about five years ago, when he
returned to the residence to which he came 79 years before.
He had been associated with the Mechanics Institute, the
Waterworks trust, the Anglers' Club, Rifle Club and the Golf Club,
and for many years acted as auditor for the majority of local clubs
and institutions. He was also the secretary of the I. O. R. for 56
years; was Registrar of Births and Deaths, a Commissioner for
Affidavits, and he kept official rain records for 25 years. During
the latter part of his life his main hobby was gardening, and he was
recognized as an expert in the growing of flowers and vegetables. He
was also a voluminous reader, and his mind was stored with useful
information. Above all he was highly respected for his sterling
integrity in all things.
Of his first marriage to Miss Harriet Hearle, there were two
children, Phyllis and William. There were also two children of his
second marriage, to Miss Helen Hiscock - Jean (Mrs. R. A. Green) and
Mary (Mrs. T. Hogg).
To them and to Mrs. Derrick, we add our sympathy to that of the
whole district in the passing of a very fine gentleman.
