John was the son of Charles Wood , a welder and native of the parish of Glencastle, Forfarshire, Scotland. Martha and John were married at St.Nicholas, Aberdeen on the 5th of November, 1820. The Woods were assisted immigrants brought to Australia by the government and engaged by James Walker at Wallerawang. The family then went to settle in Tasmania where Robert wed Constance Olive Mary Ann Dewhurst, a 16 year old girl born of convict parentage at Campbelltown, Tasmania, sometime in August 1853 at Port Sorrell, Tas.
