Archibald SYMINGTON was born in 1851 in Ayrshire Scotland. In 1900 he was a Proprietor of the"Allington" in Dumfries Scotland. He died in Apr 1926 in Dumfries Scotland. Archibald was the youngest of the eleven children of William and Janet Symington of Loudoun. He attended school nearby, then went to Glasgow and Dundee where he worked in chemical manufacturing and in his 20's went to Calcutta, India to carry on the same type of business. There he worked for Bathgate and Co. and later for Smith Stanistreet and Co. with whom he became a senior partner. He was in Calcutta for 25 years and in that time he married, had three children and became a wealthy man. He would have had many servants and all modern conveniences available at the time, and he and his family would probably have had a grand social life as was usual rich Europeans in India then. In 1880 he married 21 year old Jane Elizabeth Marshall at the Church of Scotland in Dum-Dum just outside Calcutta where her father was in the Army connected with the munitions factory. Their two daughters Jane Janet and Helen were born in 1881 and 1883 and their son Archibald William arrived in 1892. All were baptised in St Andrews Church of Scotland, Calcutta'. In 1899 the family moved to Scotland when Archibald retired after 25 years in India, and they settled at Allanton, a large house and estate near Auldgirth, not far from Dumfries. He took an interest in the Estate and made many improvements to it, including major alterations to the house after a fire in 1905. No expense was spared and the house was splendid inside and out with the latest art - nouveau style tiles in the bathrooms and stained glass designs of the period. He was retired but his obituaries tell us that he took an active part in local life, was on several public bodies, and was a Justice of the Peace. He was also a keen sportsman and as a good shot he enjoyed a day with the gun. His daughters married in 1906 and 1908 but Archibald and Jane still had their young son Archie at home and would have been living the typical Edwardian life of a Country gentleman and his family with servants, large shiny motor cars, shooting parties and a busy social life as well as doing many good works in the community. His wife was a well loved person in the community and was said to be very kind and sympathetic. She was a very active lady and took up Red Cross work at the outbreak of the 1st world war. Then in 1916 Jane died very unexpectedly aged 56. One year later at the age of 65, Archibald married his second wife, Julia Hogg Farish, eldest daughter of a retired gentleman farmer from Dumfries, and 40 years his junior! This was not the only difference between them as she was a well educated young woman, fluent in French, a writer of poetry and had trained as a teacher. It cannot have been easy for her to follow in the footsteps of Jane who had by all accounts been much loved by everyone and had been very efficient at running the house. Archibald's daughters were considerably older than Julia and Archie the son was her own age. Julia and Archibald had three sons, the last one, Gerald, born when Archibald was over 70. Then, four years later in 1926, Archibald died after a spell of failing health, leaving a young widow aged 34, three sons aged 7, 5 and 4, a grown up married son, Archie, and two married daughters in their forties. He bequeathed most of the estate including the house to his eldest son Archie, leaving a small farm and some monies to his widow and three young sons. He would never have thought for a moment that his young wife would die two years later from tuberculosis, or that his eldest son and heir would be bankrupt within a few years so that the house, its contents and all its farming estates had to be sold. The funeral of Archibald took place at the Western Necropolis, Glasgow, and his ashes were interred with those of his first wife's in the family vault in the grounds of Allanton House. The ashes of his second wife were added two years later. Obituary from Dumfries and Galloway Courier and Herald, April 24th 1926 The passing of Mr Archibald H. Symington of Allanton, which took place there after a very brief confinement to bed, on Thursday morning, is much lamented, especially in Dunscore and Auldgirth district where he was so well known. For the past six months Mr. Symington had been in failing health but up to Monday afternoon he was able to go about and take an active interest in the affairs of his estate and things in general. His demise came as a shook to the residents in the Dunscore and Auldgirth districts, in the life of which he had taken a lively interest since coming there 26 years ago. In a much wider circle Mr Symington was also well known and respected by reason of his work on several public bodies. He was a Justice of the Peace and from 1907 until last December when he retired he represented the Dunscore district on the Dumfriesshire County Council, served for a time on the old School Board and gave ungrudgingly of his time before, during and since the war on various Pensions Committees. In his public work Mr Symington was valued for his practical and comprehensive outlook and his directness of speech. Behind an outspoken manner was a warm heart and a genuine and genial personality, which attracted the sincere regard of a wide neighbourhood. To see and hear him preside at a social gathering was to understand his popularity. Born in the parish of Loudoun, Ayrshire 74 years ago, Mr Symington was the youngest member of the family of the late Mr William Symington, who for many years was connected with the Loudoun estate. In his early youth, after gaining experience in chemical manufacture in Glasgow, Dundee and elsewhere, he went to India to the firm of Smith, Stanistreet and company, Calcutta and rose to the position of senior partner. In 1889, after 25 years service, he retired. In the following year he settled at Allanton and gradually added to the estate the farms of Springfield and Moat Cairnhall. His proprietorship was marked by a considerable improvement in the land, farm buildings and fixtures of the estate. In politics Mr Symington was a strong Conservative with downright reasons for the faith that was in him - a faith strengthened by his experiences abroad - and for many years he had been chairman of the Dunscore Unionist Association and a member of the County Executive Committee. He is survived by his widow and three young sons, also two grown up daughters and son by his first wife. Of these, his son who is an officer in the royal flying corps, is in Mesopotamia; his eldest daughter is the wife of the Rev Marshall Pryde, Kilrenny, Fifeshire; and his youngest daughter - Mrs Grice, London - was recently bereaved by the death of her husband. Mr Symington was a member of the Dunscore Parish Church. His funeral takes place on Monday, leaving Allanton at 11.00am for the western necropolis, Glasgow.
