Holmes 11: Central School

The Free Church School (cnr St.Peter Street and Windmill Street) was built in 1847.  It  was handed over to the Burgh School Board in 1900 and closed six years later,  the pupils were transferred to the Central School.  The Old Academy was founded in 1838, as an independent school for boys on the site still occupied by the Central School.  The Burgh School Board took it over in 1880 and re-located it to St.Mary Street.  Girls were admitted in 1896-97.  The central school, with the traditional separate entrances for girls and boys, was re-opened on the 3rd February 1906.
