Submission No 511: Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea, Fraser Island, QLD. 5Th December 2006 (Unpublished). Submitted by: Paul O’Neill.

A Grey Wagtail was observed and photographed near Wabby Lake, Fraser Island on the 5th December 2006.

This submission highlights the value of photographs, even those of poor quality. Despite low light and the fact the images were taken through the windscreen of a vehicle they clearly depict a Grey Wagtail. Diagnostic features include the yellow rump (just visible in one image), the slaty grey upper parts and the pale legs (apparently flesh coloured).

Aging and sexing seems more problematic. Suffice to say the bird is not an adult summer male nor does it appear to be a juvenile in fresh plumage.

This record is the 17th Grey Wagtail to be accepted by BARC.

Verdict:  Accepted
