Submission No 463: Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata, Werribee, VIC., 25 - 26 May 2005.  Submitted by:  David Torr

Verdict:  Accepted

This submission relates to a sighting of a Northern Shoveler at the Western Treatment Plant, Werribee, Victoria, on the 25th September 2005 and again the following day. The bird was seen well by a number of experienced observers and had reportedly been present for some time.

The submission refers to a male in breeding plumage which when seen on the 29th May was starting to moult, with some brown streaking on breast. Despite the lack of a full description the committee voted in favour of acceptance due to the number of reliable observers confirming the sighting.

This is the 6th record of this species to be accepted by BARC but there are several undoubtedly reliable previous, but unsubmitted reports, from this site and South Australia.
