The Mc Reporter & Feedback

Nov 21st 2008
Hiya McBob,

I just found your website in my pursuit of some parts for my MAC 4600. Great site by the way. I'm a one-time
McCulloch employee, having been the Product Service Supervisor from 1992-96. I even took a trip down your way
to introduce some new products in 1995. I had a fantastic time working with the guys from Masport and visiting the
various state reps in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Sadly the company is no more, except in the
hands of the Chinese. I've seen some of the products and they certainly aren't up to par in my estimation.
I just wanted to take a minute to tell you that I found your site and was very pleased to read about all the old
McC stuff. Thanks for maintaining the site.

Very nice site Bob.
Being a 18 year ex-employee of the company it is nice to see someone keep the flame alive. We are having a McCulloch employee reunion on Oct 15th and I'll pass your site on to people I know.
I have 2 - SP125's, one with a kart engine, a CP 125 and a 101 kart engine sitting in my garage, along with some BP 1's, 3-25, and various other items. Even have an engineering production run of a 399cc McCulloch Balanced Piston snowmobile engine.

Great site really enjoyed it.
Thank you,

Terry Melen

G/Day Fellow Mc Friend ............Keeping the Mc flame alive.

I started at the age of 20 working for the Canadian division at their factory repairing saws. Cut my teeth on Mini Mac 25's and 30's. Just was just around the time of the introduction of the SP40 and the end of the PM6A and the B&D buyout. Toward the end of my tenure I was Global Product Manager, Marketing Manager and New Product Develop Manager at the Tucson AZ head quarters.
As for the casing mystery I'm not sure but I'll ask my good friend Don Woodward he will be at the reunion I'm told and he had 42 years in with the firm.
As for a BP-1, I have a friend that I'm sure your aware of Mike Acres up in Canada, I'll be seeing him in a couple of weeks and I'll see if he can spare a BP-1. He has an extensive collection of all brands, I think close to 500 restored models and is always looking to trade.
Also you should contact Wayne Sutton. Wayne was a dealer who now works for Stihl as a rep. His collection is very extensive so much so that I'm sure you have heard of him. He is always trading for saws. I have included a picture of the inside of the building he had to build just for his collection.
Wayne a really nice guy and his email is Wasaw@TDS.Net
You can reach Mike Acres at cescomkt@telus.net
Send me your address, I might have a few things kicking around that I could send you.
Thank you,

Yes us dyed in the wool Mac lovers must stick together, glad you enjoyed my site, it's a pity Mc ended up the way they did but thats life i suppose and we move on. I too had many happy years working with McCulloch as a dealer and made many good friends with a lot i still stay in contact with sharing the Mc Spirit so to speak.

Terry may i ask what you did with McCulloch as there's a few things i would like to know especially with product codes on engines, at one stage Mc used to stamp the model ID into the crankcase ie; 1-53 then the serial number but on other models we just got a serial no making it awkward to id the saw correctly can you or have you the knowledge to unravel is mystry for me ?

I to have a love of big grunty saws like the SP125c and have a couple i sold heaps of them in their day along with the SP105, i sold mostly farm and professional models and loathed the consumer saws much to the Mc reps discust tough luck for him as the farm and pro models was were the money was.

I see that you work with Carlton now at least you have stayed in the saw game product knowledge is important and worthy of remembering.

Where would a Mc Fella like me obtain a BP-1 to help complete my McCollection ??

Would love to see a few pic's of your the saws and especially the 399cc McCulloch Balanced Piston snowmobile engine.

Write back when you get time.

Bob.

Gday Frank,

Nice to hear from you, gee we'll have to start a McClub your the third ex employee that i have spoke to
for i bought some bits off a fella on Ebay and he was an ex employee as well, i'll contact him today and
you fellas can have a yap.

Nice to think that there's old Mac's still running as i have 2 old 33 and 3, 35's which include a Super 33
that is due here in a week or two as i import a few second hand saws from you guys as well.

As far as being close to Antartica well i live about half way down the east coast of Australia and the coldest
it gets here is about minus 1 degree which in my books is too cold for me.

Looks as if a lot of McMen moved into other companies like Carlton and Stihl adding a little quality to there
new place of employment good to see that you fellas still have chain bar and sprocket oil in the blood.

Whats the go with McCulloch nowadays out here in OZ their called Talon Chainsaws same horse different
colours thats all. What pissed me off and a lot of others is they wrapped up one company and started another
so now there's no support for those who had bought their product under the name McCulloch bad move.

I suppose i owe McCulloch a thank you in one way at least they got me started in saws and i have enjoyed
the memories and friendships i found along the way and now your part of that memory, pity you fellas didn't
live a little closer we could sit down a spin a few stories and tales of yesteryear.

Anyway Frank keep Mcing on and we'll stay in touch.

Mc Bob.

P.S I've added a new page to my site covering meeting you fellas i kind hope that you's don't mind as it may
encourage others who have moved on to come and say gday to a few old Mc friends.

Good Daye!

I got this website from my boss, Terry Melen.  Terry and I worked for McCulloch at the same
time.  I worked for Mc from 1976 until they let me go in Sept. of 1998.  At the time I was so
pissed at them, I told them, 'Thank You, because you guys won't be around in two years, you
goofballs are taking this company down the toilet.'   Well I was wrong, they were down and
out four months later.

I used Mac saws since I was fourteen years old, (I am 58 now) the old Mac 35A geardrives which
I still have several boxes of parts, which I got during old part returns that I used to do for Mac.  I
still have a couple running units.  Still my favorite saw.

It is good to see and hear from another Mac Fan, and that far away, only Antarctica would be further
and there isn't many trees there.  I reside in Kansas, in the center of the US.

Have a good day today, and make tomorrow be even better.  I will stay in touch.

Great Website!

Hello Mc Bob!

That Global Air shipping service was FAST! Am I to understand you were indeed pleased with those goodies?  I knew you would be!

Last night I was reviewing the activity of my auctions and then suddenly, there was ozflea! Brilliant!!

Anyhoo, If you will, Please tell me how valuable are those 125 air filters? Did I identify them correctly as pn 69100? Are these genuine McC pieces still available in the general sources of supply? How much will new, "un smudged?" genuine McC elements be worth? Just curious. I have my reasons for these inquiries.........

Your websites are incredible! I've passed on their addresses to other "connoisseurs", only to realize you are already well known by most.

Importantly...About the wall posters......I had multiple bidding fellows requesting color photocopies. When I researched that graphics project the cost was staggering. If the posters weren't copyrighted they would be scanned first, at $5.00 per sq. ft. and color printing would be $10.00 per sq. ft. The first printed copy of each poster would cost approximately $50 U.S.!  MY scanner was out of service and the graphics stores wouldn't even consider color photocopying the folded documents in individual frames! Wow! Who woulda thunk copyrighting would impose such penalties on these seemingly innocent requests! When I received your Money Order, they were sent off. That was the end of that!

I am proceeding to list some McCulloch timing guide plates today. The "Ignition Systems" wall chart you now possess will be the ideal information resource for those tools' applications! You and I fully understand their proper application and intended purpose. There are the uninformed that will need to.

I've been researching where in OZ is Weston. Apparently you're located north of Sydney in the "Great Dividing Range" ? Eucalyptus and Gum trees are indigenous species? Fascinating!

I'd cut some Eucalyptus or a reasonable facsimile ( if I remember correctly) at the McCulloch Corps. manufacturing plant while it was still in Lake Havasu, Arizona. HARD WOOD! That was back in '85 or '87.   The Corp. had already relocated out of Los Angeles, California to their Havasu location. Prior to that relocation I recall speaking to one of their engineers on the phone in the early '80s and having him suddenly ask me, rather excitedly, if he could call me back later. I could hear a squeeking sound in the background. When he called me back he explained the squeeking sounds had been caused by an earthquake taking place!  Damned San Andreas Fault!  I was the service manager for a McCulloch distributor back then and would participate in service manager training seminars at the Lake Havasu facilities. Those trips were great fun! During the '87 trip I got to visit the southern end of our Grand Canyon. Smoke from the Yellowstone National Park forest fires several hundred miles North was visible in the Canyon , but didn't affect the photography.

Selling these McCulloch items on eBay has been rather therapeutic. Brings back interesting historical  memories and allows me to vent my hidden foolishness! Pro Mac 600 series items have generated far more interest than I would have ever imagined . But, I have been offering creative? descriptions of their suggested useage.

I'll release you now. Carry on mate!

Hello Bob,

I just ran across your site and I must say it is a great!  Loved your saw restorations & conversions!
Plus,.. it's the best place for Mac info I have been able to find yet!

My question is this,..
I have a 1960's vintage Fox Kart and would like some help with information on rescuing Mac chain saws for Kart engine conversion.

Can this be done,...or is it practical?
If so,. which Mac. chain saw models should I be looking for,   795, 797, 895, ?

Are there big differences between the Kart engines vs Chain saw engines?

I have a precision welding & fabricating shop here in the states ( mostly TIG welding)  plus have basic machine shop equipment, ( lathe, mill, etc.)  and have done race prep work, so basic modifications are not a problem.

Any help you can give me,  or  information you can direct me to  would be greatly appreciated!
Thank You and best regards,

Dave Lindeman.
