Research
project launched
In March 2003, we launched a new project to develop
a device which will prevent mynas from accessing a nestbox but still
allow target species in.
The objectives of this project are to
develop a nestbox which satisfies the following criteria.
● Prevents Indian mynas from
entering the box.
● Allows small parrots such as rainbow lorikeets and pale-headed
rosellas to breed in the box.
● Offers little or no deterrent to parrots seeking a breeding
site.
Earliest results will not be known
until the end of 2003 and it may well take another year to complete
the project. While we are confident of a successful outcome,
there can be no guarantee.
Such a device will not work for all
native species. For those native animals that are deterred along
with the mynas, the MatchBox and MynaVac
Trap combination may be the only solution.
2005 update
After much effort, the mynas have won
absolutely. They are remarkable animals and worthy of the utmost
respect. While it is still be possible that someone may develop
a device that keeps mynas out while allowing other birds in, we
believe that it is unlikely. The only solution now is to remove
the bird, either in bulk prior to breeding or selectively during
breeding (refer the MatchBox/MynaVac
Trap combination).
