The MatchBox is a special nestbox which changes its function to "match" the situation.

It is a vertical box with a larger cross-sectional area than the Rosella box.  The size has been selected to particularly target the boobook owl and the dollarbird.  However, it is also suitable for the rosellas and at least some of the lorikeets.

The box is special in 2 ways:

  1. It has the ability to accept a MynaVac Trap, which is a device for trapping a feral bird that attempts to breed in the box, and
  1. it has a hinged base which allows the nest of a feral bird to be removed from the box.
A typical myna nest is illustrated adjacent and the nests are, if anything, more of a problem than the birds themselves.  We did an experiment some years back which involved inserting old myna nests into three boxes which had been used by rainbow lorikeets for several years.  The lorikeets then refused to breed in one, maybe two, of those boxes.

An additional problem is that the nests, once wetted, start to "work" like a compost and that will kill any native chicks that hatch on such a mess.

All activities associated with managing the box are done using an extendable pole.  This includes trapping a feral bird and cleaning out the box.  Once installed, there is no need to climb the tree again.
