How would you like to play a game of chess against an International Master?

25-year-old English Women’s International Master Heather Richards, whose current ELO rating is 2150, will be playing a Simultaneous Exhibition in Newcastle on Monday 8th September 2008, starting at 7.00pm.     The event will be held at Newcastle Panthers.

Heather Richards is currently ranked as equal 13th among all English female chess players.

This will be a great opportunity to learn in a very practical way, from one of the highest rated players you’re ever likely to meet.

For those who are new to chess, a Simultaneous Exhibition or Simultaneous Display (often abbreviated to "simul") is an event where one player - usually a chess master or grandmaster - plays multiple chess games at the same time, against selected players.

In a regular simul, no chess clocks are used. The master or grandmaster walks from board to board in a fixed order. Usually the boards are arranged in a large circle or square. The opponents are expected to make a move when the exhibitor arrives at the board.

To help you practice before the event, some fairly recent games of Heather Richards are listed on ChessAge.com:

These games are from the 2004 European Women’s Chess Championship, held in Dresden.

ChessAge.com has a Java-based facility, which will enable you to play through some of Heather’s games at your own pace.

2008 Hunter Valley Open Tournament

As you may know, this tournament was to have been held over the weekend of 2nd - 3rd August. We were forced to cancel the event as a result of failure to secure a suitable room on Sunday 3rd August.

A venue appears to be available for 18th - 19th October, and we would like to reschedule the tournament for then.

However, as there seems to be a decline in the number of players taking part in regional tournaments, it may be prudent to assess the likely level of support before making a formal application for this date on the NSWCA calendar.

If you are interested in competing in this event, please let us know as soon as possible, by contacting either:
