Brian, from now on referred
to as I, was born in the mid 1930's. I trained as an
electronics
engineer at EMI Electronics in Hayes, Middlesex in England.
At
the time it was common for boys to start a five year apprenticeship and
carry out their studies part time at the local technical college.
If you passed your exams one might one day get professional
qualifications. I started in 1953 and finally qualified in
Australia in 1967! and I have been a Fellow of the
Institution of
Engineers Australia since 1984.
In 1956 I met Margaret at a rock and roll dance and, after I completed my initial apprenticeship, we married in 1958 . In 1960 I was
offered a new position with EMI Electronics at their factory attached
to the Australian Weapons Research Centre (now the Defence Science and
Technology Organisation) in South Australia. In 1985 I
actually
left industry to join DSTO as a senior engineer working on a major
collaborative program with the USN. In 1992 I took over the operations
management of the DSTO Systems Simulation Centre and retired from there
in 1998 when Margaret's health made us realise that we should start
enjoying our life while we could.
My main interest outside of family and work has been cycling.
In
my youth I was a lousy racing cyclist and in later life took up touring
cycling.
