Thursday, 1 January...

After some feedback from the BPALogin project and from various users, I have compiled a new version of the BPALogin tar file for SmoothWall which utilises the latest codebase (2.0.2-1) of BPALogin. Two reasons prompted the compile:

1. 2.0.2 has a "maxheartbeatinterval" setting to stop time out issues for some users.
2. The original rc.sysinit method of starting the bpalogin script now works again. I believe this to be a better way to start the script than the inittab method.

Users wishing to upgrade to the latest version can grab it here (and frankly, that should be everyone :). As a side note the binary is considerably smaller now as I used a better set of flags when creating the gzip. Once you have the new binary extracted and configured on your SmoothWall you will then need to...:

1. Open rc.sysinit in joe.
2. Add the two lines to start bpalogin. Save and close.
3. Open /etc/inittab in joe.
4. Remove the "7:3:once:/etc/rc.d/init.d/bpalogin.init start" line. Save and close.

I have changed the 2.0 guide back to the rc.sysinit style of launching, so people new to SmoothWall, you can ignore all of the above. Happy New Year all.

Saturday, 13 December...

There appears to be a problem with bpalogin and SmoothWall 2.0 Express affecting some installs (including one of mine). I have logged a support request with the bpalogin guys and hope to have a response shortly. In the meantime, a workaround has been found and I have updated the relevant section of the guide. Here's a quick rundown for those who have already installed bpalogin with Smoothwall 2.0 Express:

1. Open rc.sysinit in joe.
2. Delete the two lines you added that start bpalogin. Save and close.
3. Open /etc/inittab in joe.
4. Scroll to the bottem and add "7:3:once:/etc/rc.d/init.d/bpalogin.init start". Save and close.

If you need a more complete description, check the relevant section of the guide (and don't forget to try the new demonstrations which I have also updated :-) ).

Wednesday, 10 December @ 2AM...

Everything is a little blurry at the moment... Just finished a major revamp of the SmoothWall 2.0 Express guide. You should stumble across a few images like so: . Click them ;-).

Tuesday, 9 December...

Wow-e, long time since an update. SmoothWall Express 2.0 was released yesterday so its probably an appropriate time for updating :-). A new guide is available, although so few things needed changing from the original guide most people probably could have got by without a new guide. Anway, enjoy, and let me know if there are any problems.

Monday, 15 October...

Another quick update: this time I added a small section for ADSL people that needed a little help, removed some of the older news, and reorganised the "Guides" bit to make it a bit more obvious which was the latest.

To the guy that asked me to remove curly quotes, will do when I have time to go through and fix.

Monday, 8 October...

Hi all... Just a quick update - fixed a few spelling/grammer mistakes in the 0.9.9 [final] guide, thanks to Hilton Travis! Keep them coming, hopefully one day the guide will be free of them .... nnnnaaaahhh! :)

Sunday, 23 September...

Finally, finally, added a new section for SmoothWall 0.9.9 final release with BPALogin -- enjoy. Let me know via email if you have any problems.

Tuesday, 18 September...

Reports are trickling in that there are problems with the guide and the final release of SmoothWall 0.9.9 - then again, others have said that it worked, so who knows. As I was away when the final version was released, I am yet to upgrade my personal box, but will tomorrow, so I will hopefully have something up shortly.
