Acid staining is a relatively new method of applying permanent colour and design to existing as well as new concrete surfaces.

The colour is achieved by spraying, brushing or rolling numerous coats of chemical stain onto either new or old plain concrete surfaces.

Metallic salts in an acidic, water-based solution react with hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) in hardened concrete to yield insoluble, coloured compounds that become a permanent part of the concrete.

The acid in chemical stains opens the top surface of the concrete, allowing metallic salts to reach the free lime deposits. Water from the stain solution then fuels the reaction.

Imperfections in the original concrete finish, including cracks, are actually desirable and contribute greatly to the finish!

After stabilising and cleaning, a coat of ultra-durable Megathane® is applied making the surface virtually scratch resistant. To enrich the surface finish, and provide ongoing protection, liquid wax is recommended.

By  combining saw-cuts with varying methods of application amazing effects can be obtained, including marbling and tile-like designs.

The  technique is often described as more of an art form than other traditional means of applying colour to concrete.

Designs are virtually unlimited and stunning, natural looking colour effects vary depending on the age and composition of the original concrete surface.

Sensational pattern effects, utilising changes in colour, saw cuts, sand blasting and/or deep acid etching (using patterns), can be achieved.

We, at Acid Art, believe there is no better way to finish an area made of concrete. The process is MUCH MORE affordable than tiling and will last many years over linoleum or painting. The range of patterns in unlimited, determined only by saw cuts made in the surface. After staining is complete the cuts can be left, for a natural, rustic look, or grouted with white or coloured cements.

Acid-etching can produce these warm, modern finishes on ANY natural concrete or cement surface. It can be applied to paving blocks in the garden or even as an eye-catching finish to table and counter tops.

Perhaps the best feature of this process is that no two surfaces will have the same finish, making your project truly unique!

Combinations of two or more of these colours also achieves great effects. New dies are currently being developed to further broaden the colour range.

As previously stated, these colours do vary considerably depending on factors such as:

  • hardness of finish
  • cement properties and amount
  • admixtures used
  • type of aggregate used
  • concrete finishing methods
  • concrete age and moisture content when stain is applied
  • weather conditions when stain is applied
  • efflorescence
