I have always had a liking for Porsche's cars. A friends father had an early 80's 911 Carrera that I had the pleasure of being a passenger in on a few occasions. Not long after discovered the 928. It struck me then as being something special even among the Porsche family. A water cooled V8, in the front of the car, as opposed to the rear engined 911 and a more refined look. In the end of course its all about personal taste and I still admire 911s but don't desire one myself.
In February 2002 I stumbled across a 1984 model 928s being sold by a friend of a friend in Melbourne. So on a whim I went and had a test drive. It was the first time I had ever sat in one and I can honestly say I was intimidated.
To my horror I saw that it was an automatic! It seemed contrary to everything a sports car is meant to be, especially a Porsche. However when you learn a bit more about the history of the 928 it makes more sense. Approximately 95% of all 928s shipped were autos. This makes sense when you consider that the "average" buyer was 45 years old or more and probably truely tired of manual cars.
They are big for a sports car and the long sloping bonet leaves you wondering just where the car finishes. My first test drive had me hooked. They sound great, have heaps of power, and fantastic breaks. Oh and by the way they are extremely comfortable as well. All in all a great package.
So I took out a loan, and purchased my first 928. Now, 9 months later I have bought another (a manual) as a project car.
Silver - '84 Zinmetallic
4 speed auto
Since Purchasing Silver I have driven him approximately 10,000 kilometers. As expected there have been repares required (totaling about $8,000 over six months). He had been somewhat neglected mechanically (you have to choose your mechanic carefully with these cars). The previous owner had done all the right things, but the mechanic wasn't really up to scratch. As a result there were a few big ticket repairs required.
Bob - '82 Black
5 speed manual
As you can see Bob (short for "Black on Black" which is apparently the colour scheme of this 928) is in need of some TLC. Bob was (apparently) splashed with burning petrol from a Molotov cocktail thrown at something else. The unfortunate result is a ruined paint job. However the interior and mechanicals are reputed to be quite good.
If your interested in other Porsche sites, have a look at the web ring below. There are a couple of other 928 sites in there too.
