The Series III
He got a grand idea (delusion!) when he saw a Series III in the Fowles Purdy auction yard. It was perfect, bar a totalled windscreen and some pillar damage....from when its handbrake failed and it had run into a golf clubhouse in New South Wales somewhere!
David said that this was caused by a loose ratchet in the handbrake, caused by road vibrations...causing bolts to work loose where the handbrake was secured to the firewall.

That Series III seemed (to me) to be an unfinished canvas......David was continually modifying the inside to accomodate spare batteries, the Engel, VOX stereo, diff lock, those special airbags that go in springs that can be inflated for heavy duty loads. This beast was often in the Alpine region and it was also our workhorse for getting firewood on weekends. It was a source of pleasure for my dad that Uncle Maurie's windscreen was in it...so we were continuing our association with his original land rover.
David never was able to cure the pillar problems - they looked perfect but let in the rain. And occasionally on rough, winding roads the doors would fly open spontaneously - great fun for the surprised passenger!
