Life in Australia:
Ivan and Anna Tichanovs together with their three children Ludmilla, Elena and
Tamara came to Australia on the General W.C. Langfitt, a former troop carrier, in
September 1949. They landed at Melbourne and went to the Bonegilla Migrant Camp. In 1950 Ivan
commenced work at the Yallourn State Electricity Commission. He stayed in the Yallourn West
Camp while the rest of the family stayed in the Sale Migrant Camp. This arrangement lasted for two years when
the family was allocated a Housing Commission two bedroom house in Moe. In 1955
Ivan bought the house in Newborough and he and his wife lived there the rest of
their lives. Ivans first job with the State Electricity Commission was working
on road repair until the foreman found he could drive trucks and he became the
driver of the Yallourn rubbish truck collecting rubbish from Yallourn North,
Morwell River, Hearnes Oak and Yallourn. He did this until retirement in 1981.
He had a wife and eight children to support so to make ends meet the crew
recycled the bottles, copper wire, aluminium, brass, iron and steel and
anything else which had a sale value. He also worked on weekends and after work
on ditch digging. Kaiser/Tichanovs Family
