As a young pickpocket growing up on the streets of New Orleans, Gambit attempted to steal the
wallet of Jean-Luc Lebeau, the head of the legendary Thieves Guild. Jean-Luc took a shine to
the young mutant and adopted him into the folds of the Thieves Guild as his son.
During his time with the Thieves Guild Gambit gained his mastery in the art of thieving and learned many of his combat skills, such as his mastery of throwing objects and the use of a bo. At the age of 17, Remy had to earn his place in the Thieve's Guild through the Tracts of Passage. To do so, he had to steal L'Etroile du Tricherie - the Cheating Star, from Genevieve Darceneaux, the daughter of an infamous jewel thief. His brother Henri accompanied him as his sponsor.
Gambit made Genevieve fall in love with him and with her vunerable he was able to steal the
pendant. Unfortunately, Remy encountered Sabretooth, who was hired to recover the pendant from
Genevieve. Sabretooth kidnapped both Henri and Genevieve, and dangled them from ropes atop of
Notre Dame. In exchange for the pendant, Sabretooth allowed Gambit to save only one. Genevieve
fell to her death.
Growing up in New orleans, Remy fell in love with his childhood friend Bella Donna, the daughter of Marius Boudreaux, leader of the Assassin's Guild who were at war with the Thieves Guild. The leaders sought to bring about peace between the warring clans by marrying a thief's son with an Assassin's daughter; namely Remy and Bella Donna.
Peace was not desired by all: Julien, Bella Donna's brother, challenged Gambit to a duel and was
killed. In an attempt to preserve the peace, Gambit was banished from the guild.
Gambit left his hometown of New Orleans and travelled the globe practising his skills. A chance meeting with Storm in Paris led to Gambit helping her defeat the demonic Shadow King. This lead to him renouncing his thieving ways and being invited to join the X-Men.
