The following is an excerpt from the 'Border Watch' newspaper (Mount Gambier, South AUSTRALIA) 14 Aug 1878

John ANGUS circa 1879                                                      Monday August 12  1878

Before Mr. T.J.S O'HALLORAN  S.M.   John Angus was charged on information of Mary Dearsey (sic) with having unlawfully deserted his two children by her, and left them without adequate means of support.   Informant said she was a married woman, but had lived with the defendant at Casterton for the last six years as his wife.   She had two children to him.   He left his home in Casterton last June to seek employment, but did not return.   She followed him to Mount Gambier.   She had obtained a situation here for herself, but was now out of it, and left homeless with her children.     Defendant was getting good wages.         To defendant - Her children were defendant's, and were registered in his name by his consent.   Defendant was not away from home, except for a month or two working, during the six years she had lived with him.   Her husband had left her 10 years ago.   She had not cohabited with other men during the defendant's absence.   In reply to the Court complainant said she had no witnesses present, but could, if necessary, get some from Casterton.   The S.M. said as complainant had no witnesses the information must be dismissed.   'Cases of this kind could not be considered proved on the uncorroborated testimony of a woman'.

The 'Lady Angus'

At the age of about 83 years, John ANGUS (born 1844), began to design and build a 42' 6" fishing cutter at the family property in Angus Avenue, Edwardstown.   His wife Sarah (BOX) thought he had gone crazy and objected to this sudden urge for a new boat.  A determined man, John put aside the objections and with the help of his son Archibald the boat was built.   John's grandson Ralph, although only about 5 yrs old and already an accomplished machinist, sewed most of the sails!  Completed in around 1927 the 'Lady Angus' was put onto trailer wheels and moved for its launch at Port Adelaide.   Most of the life of this vessel was to be spent in the Edithburgh, Port Victoria and Kangaroo Island areas of South Australia.   A storm in 1942 saw the end of the boat where it was wrecked at Sultana Beach (near Edithburgh) at a location then commonly known as 'Cossatz's Beach.

The following is a photo of the 'Lady Angus' that appeared in the Chronical newspaper.   The accompanying story described a history of the boat and focussed on an days outing of locals, 52 in all, from Edithburgh to the Troubridge Shoal Lighthouse.   During the trip a large storm sprang up and Archie had to ferry all on board to the lighthouse where they were to spend the night.   No one was injured and from reports had a wonderful experience.
