Bursaria spinosa

Blackthorn, Kurwan

Family: Pittosporaceae

This is an erect shrub ranging in height from 2m to occasionally 5m depending on soil conditions. These include dry rocky hillsides to tall woodland.

The thin, soft leaves are a dull dark green, usually notched at the tip, about 10-25mm long.

The plant gets its name from the sharp pointed spines(actually new branches forming) along the existing branches.

The small white fragrant flowers form dense pyramid shaped masses in late Summer - Autumn. The fruit is a flat capsule 4-6mm long.
