Competition Format 2005
05/01/05
The Cafe Racer Club will not offer a Thunderbikes category in 2005!
We plan to be competing in the C&D feature and the bracket racing this season. This years format is still being finalised however we have confirmed that the Thunderbikes class will NOT run this season.
On the up side the change from last years categories should make the racing more spectator friendly. In F3 the 12th placed RS250 could in fact be winning his/her class amongst the combined field. This season there will no longer be an opportunity for this confusion.

June 5 & 6 Mallala 2004

Round 1 Brackets 5th June 04 (Day 1) Track Cold
Practice:
Nothing to report, as usual I was running late. I got out of the pits and on my first lap had to come in, practice was over! Some of the other guys reckon they started our time from 9:00 although none of us were out at that time! Bugger.
Qualifying:
First lap, passed by an RS250 under brakes, exiting the hairpin into pacific waste he high sides! Not spectacular but he was unconscious and broke his collarbone.
Back to the pits!
Incidentally a get well soon to Paul, who highsided at the same turn during Friday first practice. He broke his collarbone but was in good spirits on Sunday. His bike suffered minimal damage and it’s two months till our next meet. Perhaps then we’ll resurrect team PIMP!
Qualifying went without a hitch; I qualified in the 1:25’s. I was hoping for more but that’s 4 seconds quicker than last time. They’ve put me in the fast group! Haha 23 out of 24.
Race 1:
WOW, the lights are on…
I got a great start as I passed about 8 bikes into turn 1. Cool!
To keep it short the group in front pulled a big gap (a couple of them passed me on the first two laps) and my only close competition was an R6. I’m bloody slow through turn 2!Lap 3 I see a menacing shadow through turn 2, lap 4 the R6 is close to passing me around the outside but I’m upright earlier and out drive him to the next turn. Lap 5 I see the R6 on the outside; it’s funny what you have time to watch; I enjoyed watching the R6 drift sideways onto the ripple strip as he never gets a nose in front. I win that battle and chuck a great second gear wheelie after the finish. It came up, then really hoisted. A couple of spectators later commented that they thought I was going to biaggi it!
Race 2:
Race 2 was less exciting. The bike was spinning out of EVERY corner but my times weren’t great. On lap 5 two R6’s pass me into turn 3, I got on a line to pass the first out of turn 3 but the second R6 got a wheel in front of and I had to back off. Coming through the esses I have a big rear wheel loose, the Yamahas disappear and I take 16th. Darn I was running 14th most of the race. It’s still good given my qualifying, but even better when I check the rear tyre! It’s only got 10psi in it! Well bugger me; I was one second off my fastest lap with a flat rear. There was a large group scrapping just behind, I’m glad they didn’t quite catch me! Later I checked the tyre and find a sliver of metal, perhaps from a braided line.
Sunday Morning:
I miss practice, that’s the bad news. The good news is I’ve sourced a second hand rear from the fast guys and they fit it to the rim for me .
Race 3:
I’m not happy about missing practice and its COLD!!
Once again I get a good start but it’s a ritual that everyone passes me in turn 2! Nothing spectacular but I loose most of the places I made on the start. I finished 20th. I shouldn’t complain though, I’m still ahead of my qualifying position.
Race 4:
Well my brother showed up for this one so I hope it’s good! I wheelie off the start and again make up a few places. Lap 3 and I’m passed out of turn 2 by another R6, damn, at least it was a safe pass. I’m right back onto him in the southern hairpin and pass him through the kink. Lap 4, again he passes me in turn 2 but this time he baulks me in turn 3, I’m sitting right behind him under breaks into the northern hairpin. I didn’t see the yellow but saw the crashed rider running from his crashed bike. I follow the R6 close and get good drive onto the start/finish straight. I blast past before the line; it’s good to know you can win from behind if your last corner is executed well.
Haha I slow too much into turn 1 and again I’m passed into turn 2. I follow for a lap sizing up my opportunities.
It’s now the last lap, I’ve been on him into the northern hairpin, it’s tempting to try and pass on the way out but I keep my head (the next corner is notorious for high sides and I’d have to pass on the outside). My drive, however is great so I decide to pass into the esses. I pull alongside (on the inside of course) and match brakes. The R6 tries to brake later but runs wide; yeah I’ve got him now! Final corner, I enter on a wide line set up for a great launch onto the straight when an R6 appears in front of me! He’s thrown it in shallow, no good for corner speed but he baulks me again! I hit the breaks and then nail it….
….and out drive him to the line! WOOOHOOOO my best race yet, not for times but for racing itself.
Perhaps next time I’ll cover that, we missed crashing by centimetres. I placed 14th, coincidentally my best finish of the weekend, a good result and a great race!

April 24 & 25 Mallala 2004
25/04/04
Round 1 Brackets 25th April 04 (Day 1) Track Cool
Practice:
I missed practice, as my gear hadn’t been scrutineered. I’d had the bike inspected but didn’t wear my gear, on my return, wearing my gear; the equipment scrutineer was nowhere to be found. Practice started, so by the time we (well me, I had no helpers) found someone to scrutineer my equipment I got onto the track in time for the chequered flag. I suppose this means I did get to practice, but never completed a lap.
Lucky for me I found a spot in another practice session (I won’t explain ;-)). My best was a 1:28:05, disappointing but since this was my first meeting there’s so much to get comfortable with.
Qualifying:
Both days grids were to be set from this session. I was nervous but happy to be out on the track. I had some issues with my cooling system, loosing some fluid (none to the track), and qualified with a 1:27:26. In light of practice this wasn’t too bad, I visited the track the week before (first time in 6 years!) and managed to turn in a string of 26’s and a 25. At this point I think I should point out that riding my new aprilia R Factory around the track is a little daunting. It’s the first $35 000 AUD bike I’ve owned!
During this session I had an RGV slam across my nose in turn one, I grabbed a heap of radial brakes and he JUST missed me. It’s good to know that the bike is better than me and I can get away with these things! Ask me for a pic of James 01 RSV R, we were in the same garage and I saw a HUGE slash in his front tyre and a chip in his faring where he clipped the guy in front. Very nasty.
For reference 6 years ago I was hitting 20’s at the same track in perfect conditions riding a YZF750. So there’s plenty of improvement to be had, but (funnily for a “racer”) I’m not in a hurry.
The brackets were split into two groups, I was allocated the second division 3rd on the front row of the grid. Front row of the grid!?! AWESOME!! What a way to start racing!
Race 1
Line up on the grid, things are not good, the bike is overheating. Proceed on sighting lap, I figure a bit of air flow will help. Bike locks up around turn two and I pull into the pits. My first meeting, my first race, I get to see it from the pits!! that’s racing!
I was hugely disappointed and vow to make a heroic effort in the second race. For the fans, a Ducati 749 took line honours. He was faster than me in qualifying but I was saying to myself “bugger it I can beat him!” Well we will see.
Race 2
Line up on the grid again, nervous as hell. I complete the sighting lap and notice the temperature reading on my bike. NO!!!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!! I immediately switch it off and wait for the red light. Stuff it I’m not pulling in the pits again! Red lights go on, I hit the ignition, put my visor down, lights turn off and I’m away. One wheelie, back off, where’s the duke, why hasn’t he passed me? Second wheelie, third wheelie and I are away. First into turn one! YEAHAW! My first start and I’m leading the race. My mates are cheering me on from pit lane.
I take it easy for the first lap, warming the tyres. The temperature has dropped 10 degrees so I should be right now.
Lap 2 turn two and an RGV comes around the outside of me. Sweet, this is what its about. I brake on the inside, not quite enough to pass though. If it was the last corner on the last lap I would have been through! The back kink was next so I blasted past the RGV into the northern hairpin. I brake safely and see the RGV pass me on the outside under brakes. (It might be my first race but I’d been covering the inside lines on all the corners!) WOW I thought as I saw him run wide, yep I moved up the inside and powered away.
Lap 3, my mates are cheering me on and I don’t see the competition. I heard later that both the RGV and the Ducati 749 on his tail out braked themselves into turn 2, running off onto a sealed section. They had to ride through the pits to rejoin the race. I wheelied out of the northern hairpin this lap, getting a bit keen!
Lap 5, passed my first backmarker, oh yeah!
From lap 3 I rattled off three 25’s and a 24 on the final lap (I put my head down!) taking the flag and chucking a second gear power wheelie from the start/finish to the turn in for the pits. I’m not a wheelie person but it was impressive for both myself and the spectators!
I heard from the spectators that the commentator was talking the aprilia up in a big way! I was told if they didn’t know my name before the race they sure as hell would after!
That was the end of racing for day 1, I checked my times and was happy with the 24. 24:67 was my “breakout” time so I did a good job!
Round 1 Brackets 26th April 04 (Day 2) Track Cool
Practice:
After yesterday’s performance I plan to put in a few good laps and check the timesheet. I’ve still got a chance of winning the bracket if I don’t breakout.
Pulling out I see my main competition on his 749 Ducati (999 faring) and decide to follow for a few laps, let’s see what this guys got! After two laps I was bored, he must have been working on his lines (In retrospect perhaps I should have been too!) so I passed him. Pulling distance on my main rival made me feel better about my race, he hadn’t passed me yet. My times were all over the place, I tried a few things . My best was a 1:26:73, not great but I’m still in the hunt.
The good news was that I was the only person to get 8 laps in at practice, others only managed 6 or 7. Once again this calmed my mind.
Race 1
All psyched up and on the line for a good start. The red drops and I’m away, one wheelie, two wheelie, three wheelie. Once again I can’t hold down the front, but get to turn one first. I steal two seconds from the Ducati 749 on the first lap and never looked back. On Lap 5 I passed a backmarker going into the esses, hopefully leaving a mobile chicane for my mate on his 749 ;-).
Well that’s it! I led from start to finish with a best time of 1:24:10. Now that’s more like it! I broke my bracket but won’t complain. Also makes for a shorter race report!
I shook hands with the guy on the 749 after this race, he was close all the way (I kept looking back and checking). We had both picked up the pace and I discovered it was his first meet too!
Race 2
Since I’ve a DNS and broken out this meet the last race is purely for line honours. I don’t want that Ducati to beat me!
My start is better, or is it? I only wheelied once but that bloody Ducati 749 is right with me! Hehe, I’ve got the line into turn one anyway, YEAHAW!! Once again I pull a 2 second gap on the first lap, but the guy on the 749 is focussed! Lap 2 turn three (Southern hairpin) he passes me on the outside. I should explain; the best race line is from halfway across the track out. I’ve been inside the optimum line on this corner to ensure no-one even thinks of passing me up the inside (they’d push me very wide on the exit if they did!). So the 749 passes me in a beautiful sweeping motion. No worries I’ll blast by through the back kink. I’m kind on my brakes but destroy my competition here, knee down (not hanging off) 4th or 5th gear. I short shift to 5th but could hold 4th if I wanted. I’m not putting in enough effort to maximise my times yet, just keeping competitive.
So I’ve blasted by and brake a little later into the northern hairpin. Don’t want him passing me here, it might turn into quite a fight!
Lap 3, turn three I brake a little later but keep my tight line (if I move wider he might stuff it up the inside, and I’m not letting that happen!). Well bugger me, he’s gone around the outside again. MMMM I love this mille, I blast past again, no effort required (until the brakes that is). I hold the 749 out for the rest of the lap.
Lap 4, turn 3 I brake a little later again (still in my comfort zone) and hear the sound of a 749 REALLY close. He didn’t get past me again I’d found his limit and lifted my game . When I get my tigs I might lose my ability to hear the bike behind! I held the lead for the rest of the race, it made the race go quicker having someone to fight with!
I was also impressed by my times when the pace picked up I hit the following:
Lap4: 1:24:57, Lap5:1:23:96, Lap6 1:22:82
I can tell you I didn’t know I went faster on that last lap, just put my head down and was pleased to take line honours.
So that was my meeting, 1 DNS 3 line honours, 2 with great power wheelies!
If I entered thunderbikes I would have placed third! Hindsight is a marvellous thing, I was going to enter but decided that cash should be saved for tyres .
Thanks also to Paul who saw me struggling with my bike after race 2 day 1 and became my ring in, after race, mechanic.
