West African DRUMMING - WEEKLY CLASSES IN CANBERRA

During these 1˝ hour group classes, you will learn the accompaniment parts, breaks and solos for traditional West African rhythms. You will also develop an understanding of the cultural background and the structure and ensemble arrangements of the rhythms.  You will be provided with notation of the rhythms covered in the class. Classes are designed for continuing students however the 6.15pm class accommodates beginner drummers at the commencement of each term.  Class teacher, Kate Gascoyne, is a qualified teacher who has studied drumming and dance in Ghana, Africa and performs with local group ‘Drumassault’.

Cost: $25 per session (if paying casually) or $200 per 10-week term (if paying upfront)

Concession: Concession card holders (full time students or unemployed) receive a 25% discount

Drum Hire: Djembes can be hired for $5 per session or $30 per term

DRUMASSAULT @ BELCONNEN COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

DRUMASSAULT @ DOVES & RIBBONS DAY

Live music, fashion, food and drink, raffles, giveaways and much more..  a cause to celebrate!
Doves and Ribbons Day 2008 is a day dedicated to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS sufferers throughout the world.  This year the money raised will be donated to OzCots - a project launched in 2003 by Canberra-based Despina Voudouris - to support Cotlands, a South African orphanage for HIV/AIDs children.  The even runs from 12-5pm with awesome local music acts on the main stage in Flinders Way.  Click here to download flyer for this event.

DRUMASAULT @ TUGGERANONG FESTIVAL

 

The Tuggeranong Community Festival runs over two days - Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November.  Sunday is the family fun day so bring the kids and enjoy rides, demonstrations, local bands and entertainment, photo competitions, stalls, water activities and children's shows.  Drumassault will be performing on stage before the headlining act, the Black Sorrows!  Stick around afterwards for the fireworks that close the festival.

WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING & DANCE WORKSHOPS with a true master..

TUZA AFUTU returns to Canberra in 2009!

Come along to Tuza's drumming and dance workshops and experience learning traditional West African rhythms and dances from a true master.  Born in Ghana, West Africa, Tuza began drumming at a very young age immersing himself in the traditions of Ghanaian drum and dance throughout his formative years.  He became the lead drummer of his village and a Master Drummer recognised by the 'Commission on Culture' of Ghana as a leading exponent of traditional music. Tuza has worked with Ghana's national cultural troupe 'The Dance Factory', as well as other top cultural ensembles.  Tuza now works with Teambeat and resides in Sydney and we are lucky to have him come to Canberra in February for the first of his 2009 Canberra workshops.

                 Drumming (Intermediate-Advanced)) 12.00 - 1.30pm

West African DRUMMING WORKSHOPS for BEGINNERS

 

Come and experience the fun and excitement of tribal drumming!  Learn traditional rhythms from West Africa on the djembe and dundun drums.  This workshop is aimed at beginners and drums are provided. Your teacher, Kate Gascoyne, performs with local drum and dance group Drumassault and is a qualified teacher.  Her enthusiasm and expertise will bring out the rhythm in you!  Use this workshop as a fun way to spend the afternoon and maybe as the beginning of your drumming career. A number of beginner workshops are held throughout the year so choose the date that suits you best!
