School Workshops

Drum Effect delivers 8-week African drumming programs within ACT and NSW primary schools.  Program teacher, Kate Gascoyne, is a qualified teacher who thrives on using music to engage students.  The program involves groups of up to 25 students in a series of inclusive music-making sessions during which students learn the rhythms, techniques, and cultural significance of traditional West African drumming.  Sessions are enhanced with the use of traditional song and dance.

Drumming as a learning activity is ideal for engaging students who display challenging behaviour and while music is Kate's specialist area, behaviour management is her teaching strength.  Effective teaching strategies combined with an energetic and highly appealing activity such as drumming results in enthusiastic students who experience success and feel empowered as they work with other students to create rhythms.

High quality djembe drums and other traditional  African instruments are provided at each session.  The program concludes with an exhilarating performance for the whole school community.  Being a local Canberra resident, Kate is available to attend school concerts, camps, assemblies and festivals to showcase school drumming groups.

Contact Kate Gascoyne at Drum Effect to enquire about a program for your school.

"Kate's enthusiasm, tremendous teaching skills and excellent organisation ensured that our drumming sessions were the highlight of the week for staff and students alike.  A must program for challenging students."
