Windows Desktop
The simple opening screen in Windows95 that contains a few objects, the Start Menu and a taskbar.
Shortcut
An icon containing a direct route to a specific object. You can customize your desktop by creating shortcuts for the programs you use most often.
Mouse is an external device used to send commands to the computer by moving the mouse cursor on the screen. There are keyboard commands which can be used instead of a mouse.
The mouse pointer is either a black arrow or a white vertical bar. The insertion point or text entry cursor is a flashing black vertical bar and works the same as a cursor in DOS.
Insertion point shows where you are in a document and is called the cursor in DOS programs. It is a flashing vertical bar.
Multi-tasking is the use or more than one application at a time.
Scroll Bars enable you to move parts of a document into view if the entire document does not fit in the window. Moving the insertion point with cursor movement keys does the same thing. Scroll Bars can only be accessed with a mouse and they are displayed at the right and bottom edges of the document window. The scroll boxes inside the scroll bars indicate vertical and horizontal location in the document. Click the arrow to scroll up or down one line. Click the double arrow to scroll up or down one page.
Maximise and minimise buttons enable you to enlarge the window to full screen size or reduce a window to an icon. They are in the top right corner of the application window and the maximise button is a square and the minimise button is a dash.
Application Window has a Window Title and Menu Bar. Several child windows can be opened at the same time and these windows share the Application Windows Menu Bar. Windows inside Applications windows have their own title bar unless they are maximised.
Title Bar shows the name of the application or document, This name is called the Window Title and is the name of an application, document, or group, directory or file that is active. This is the top line of the window or screen if the window is maximised.
Menu Bar lists the available menus. Most windows programs have a File menu, Edit menu and Help menu, in addition to menus unique to the application. The Menu Bar is displayed on the second line of the screen. Press Alt to move to the Menu Bar and press Right arrow to read each Menu Bar option.
Drop down Menus are a list of options that drop down from each option on the Menu bar. Press Down Arrow to read the Drop Down Menu options.
ToolBar is displayed on the top line of the application window below the menu Bar and above the Ribbon Bar and consists of about 20 icons which give quick mouse access to the Tools or commands available.
Icons are small pictures of commands displayed on the Toolbar, immediately under the Menu Bar which give quick mouse access to commands. In Program Manager Icons are pictures of applications displayed in groups.
Format Bar is displayed below the Toolbar and gives quick access to character and paragraph formatting. Not all Windows programs have a Ribbon Bar.
Font is a style or size of printing and the true font size is displayed in Windows. This is referred to as WYSIWYG (pronounced wizzy wig) an acronym for What You See Is What You Get.
Ruler is displayed across the top of the document window to give quick mouse access to tabs, margins, paragraph indents and column margins.
Control Menu OR System Menu is a horizontal dash in the upper-left corner of each window. This menu allows you to minimise, maximise and close windows and switch to other application programs. Alt with Space gives access to this menu and down arrow reads the options. Alt with hyphen gives access to this menu for child windows.
Dialog Box is a rectangular window that supplies or requests information about the task you are performing. Dialog Boxes have Buttons, Text Boxes, List Boxes or combo boxes, Radio boxes and Check Boxes. You can move around a dialog box with Tab and move in reverse order with Shift with Tab.
Buttons initiate action and are usually OK or Cancel and are located either at the bottom or the right hand side of Dialog Box. Usually OK is highlighted by default and and when you press Enter you are selecting the default button.
Edit Boxes require that you type text in them. For example, when you are saving a file a Edit Box appears for you to type the file name. Inside the Edit Box it will display a default name like doc1.doc which disappears when you start typing your preferred file name.
List Boxes display a list of choices which are usually listed alphabetically. Up and Down arrow read the choices. Drop down List Boxes are used in small Dialog Boxes. These are sometimes called combo boxes.
