User Profiles

Enable User Profiles on a computer

User profiles are good for individual display settings and private email.

  1. Start, Settings Control panel
  2. Password
  3. User Profiles
  4. "Users can customize their preferences and desktop settings. Windows switches to your settings when you logon"

Create New User.

Choose Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, User Profiles.

Click New User and fill in the prompts

Select

Customize settings.

Desktop

Start Menu.

Leave all the others unchecked.

Later on you can have your own folders for

My Documents and Favourites.

Your work will be saved in c:\Windows\Profiles\username\My Documents

Save settings for new user

When you next turn on the computer, type your name as username.

Make changes to your display colours and sizes.

Start, Settings. Control panel, Display, Appearance.

The settings are saved when you turn off the computer

Change your Password

To change your password or change settings for your user profile

Choose Start Menu, Settings, Control panel, Password

DISPLAY SETTINGS.

  1. Choose Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, Display, Appearance.
  2. Select a scheme and click Apply.

NOTE: If you change the scheme colours, save the scheme in your name.

You may also change the Screen Saver and Background colours.

 

Customize the Comptuer

Startup Programs

Automatically start programs when you turn the computer on.

If you always use Zoomtext, it is best to place these programs in the Startup folder in the Start menu.

I will explain how to put Zoomtext into your personal Startup folder.

You will need to copy the Zoomtext shortcut from the Zoomtext folder in the general Start Menu and paste it to the Startup Folder in your Personal Profile Start Menu

1 Open Windows Explorer (Start key with E)

2 .Select C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Zoomtext and select Zoomtext shortcut.

3 .Press Control with C to copy OR right mouse, copy

4 .Select C:\Windows\Profiles\username\StartMenu\Programs\Startup

5 press Control with V to paste shortcut.

Copy a Shortcut to the Desktop

I will use the example of copying Zoomtext icon to the Desktop.

  1. Open Windows Explorer (Start key with E)
  2. Select C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Zoomtext and select Zoomtext shortcut.
  3. Press Control with C to copy
  4. Go to the Desktop folder (Press Tab, Home)
  5. Press Control with V to paste.

Screen saver

Screen saver can be changed or set to activate after a speicfied number of minutes

1 Choose Start Menu

2 Settings, Control Panel, Display

3 Switch to Screen Saver page.

4 Select Screen Saver and type number of minutes before it is activated.

Monitor sleep mode

1 Choose Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Display

2 Switch to Screen Saver page.

3 Click Settings button

4 Set all settings to never if you don’t want computer screen or hard disk to turn off if not used for a specified time. Otherwise set a time.

Important – make sure you have saved your work before you are not using your computer for a short time i.e. lunch break, chat, phone, etc. in case of computer or power failure.

Computer sleep mode.

1 Choose Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Display

2 Switch to Screen Saver page.

3 Click Settings button

    1. Set all settings to never if you don’t want computer screen or hard disk to turn off if not used for a specified time. Otherwise set a time.
