Reading a page

Press F11 to switch between full screen and regular view.

8 Click Scroll Bars to read through text.
" Click "Down Arrow" to scroll line by line.
Click between "position indicator" and "down arrow" to scroll to new screen
Drag "position indicator" or "square"

7 Press down arrow or page down.

Jaws will read automatically.
Press Control to stop the voice
Press down arrow and up arrow to read next or previous item
Insert + Down arrow will activate continuous reading
Insert + Enter to skip links and read text.

Reading Frames

8 Click in the frame then press down arrow
OR
Right click anywhere in the frame and select "Open frame in new window"
When finished, press Alt + F4 to close the window frame.

7 Press F6 to move to the frame then press down arrow.

Press insert + Enter and Jaws will read the first block of text which is usually in the main frame.

Links

Hyperlinks are displayed as blue text if unvisited or violet text if visited.

8 Click a link to Open a new page.
Right mouse click and select Links List to display a list of links.

7 Press Tab to move to each link and press Enter to open a new page
Press Context key and select Links list to display a list of links

Jaws will announce "Link" when you are on a link and press Enter to open
Press Insert + F7 to display a list of links.

Edit Boxes

8 Click in an edit box before typing text and Click the button to activate.

7 Press Tab to move to an edit box and press Enter OR press tab to the button and press Enter.

When you hear "Edit box" press Enter to turn Forms mode on.
Press Tab to move to an edit box
Press tab to the button and press Enter.
Control + Insert + Tab will move to the first edit box.
When you leave the forms page, Jaws will return to virtual cursor mode OR press Plus on num pad.

Surf Between Pages

8 Click BACK to return to previous page and click FORWARD to revisit a page

7 Press Alt + Left arrow or Backspace to return to previous page
Press Alt + Right arrow to revisit a page

Press Alt + Left arrow or Backspace to return to previous page
Press Alt + Right arrow to revisit a page

Home Or Start Page

8 Click HOME to go to start page

7 Press Alt + Home

Pages Previously Opened

8 Click "Down arrow" in address bar to choose visited links.

7 Press Alt + D, Down arrow, Enter

8 Select text with mouse by click and drag

Press Control + C to copy

Press Shift + down arrow to select text.
(Insert + Shift + Down arrow will read selected text)

Press Alt with Tab to switch to application and press Control + V to Paste

FAVOURITES

Add A Favourite

  1. Any page you may want to visit again can be added to your Favourites like a bookmark
  2. Choose Favourites, Add to Favourites.(Alt + A, A)
  3. Click OK (press Tab to OK button and press Enter)

 

Add a Favourite to a specific folder

  1. Example add White pages to Telephone numbers folder
  2. Choose Favourites, Add to Favourites.(Alt + A, A)
  3. Click The Create In button
  4. Select your folder and press Enter or
  5. click New Folder button and type folder name and press Enter
  6. Select folder and press Enter

Organize Favourites

  1. For example move Yellow pages to Telephone numbers folder
  2. Choose Favourites, Organize (Alt + A, O)
  3. Tab to the list and select page eg yellow pages
  4. Select Move button
  5. Select folder eg telephone numbers
  6. Click OK
  7. Click Close

Rename A Favourite

  1. Choose Favourites, Organize (Alt + A, O)
  2. Tab to the list and select page eg yellow pages
  3. Select RENAME button (Alt + R)
  4. Type new name
  5. Click Close

NOTE: When reading favourites, left and right arrow open and close folders.

HISTORY

Click History or press Control with H to turn on and off.

Press up and down arrows to select when

Press left and right arrows to Open and close

Clear history

  1. Tools, Internet Options.
  2. Click Clear History button

Click in Edit box and type the keywords and press Enter

The search engine will tell you how many it found and will display the first ten matches.

Usually there is a button called NEXT to see the next ten matches.

Sometimes it is a good idea to bookmark the list and take your time to check each site

Save an interesting page to your My Documents folder and open it off line or in Word

Print a page.

Print the same page without pictures.

NOTE: To turn off pictures, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Print background colours and images – off.

Activity 4 Create Favourites Folder

Create a Folder in your Favourites list called Search Engines

Add the following five search engines to the folder

www.excite.com.au

www.infoseek.com

Activity 5 Search Engines

Search for Todays temperature in Melbourne and Brisbane.

a) Print the webpage with the answer.

b) What search engine did you use?

c) What keywords did you use.

 

Activity 6 Subject Searches

List four subject areas within Vicnet.

Use a subject search in a Search Engine to find a recipe for cooking crocodile.

  1. Tools Menu, Options, General
  2. Click Colours button (Alt + O)
  3. Use Windows Colours should be checked.
  4. You can also change the colours of the links.
  5. Click OK
  6. Click Apply (Alt + A)
  7. Tools Menu, Options, General
  8. Click Accessibility button (alt + E)
  9. ü Ignore colours Specified on web pages
  10. ü Ignore font sizes Specified on web pages
  11. ü Ignore font styles Specified on web pages
  12. Click OK
  13. Click Apply (Alt + A)

Select A Font Style To Display Web Pages

  1. Tools Menu, Options, General

  3. Choose a web page font eg Arial
  4. Click OK

Choose View, Text Size, largest

Change Hyperlink colours

  1. Alt T, O (Tools, Options)
  2. Control + Tab to General page
  3. Alt + O (Colours)
  4. Alt + I (Visited link colour)
  5. Pick colour
  6. Alt + N (Unvisited link colour)
  7. Pick colour
  8. Alt + H (tick "Use Hover colour")
  9. Alt + O (Hover colour)
  10. Pick colour.
  11. OK OK

 

WEB ACCESSORIES

Web Accessories is a Microsoft program which can be downloaded from www. Microsoft.com. This program allows you to right click on a frame and open it in a separate window. It also provides a list box of Link.
