This is the view from the roof of the Hilton Hotel.  Pollution is rampant.  The picture shows how modern Cairo has spread nearly to the base of the Great Pyramid.

Middle kingdom

A beautifully pleated kilt and elegant head-dress adorn this statue.  However, the Middle Kingdom saw a return to less detailed statues with big ears, misshapen legs and long arms.  This king is shown as a person, not a god.

Objects from the tomb of Tutankhamon about 1350 BC.  A child king, he died at the age of 18.  Some believe he was murdered.  Because he died at an unexpectedly early age, his tomb was not as embellished as some.  Seeing the treasures here, it defies belief what must have been in some of the other tombs.
This life-size gilded statue is one of two that guarded the tomb.  Made of wood, they are coated in bitumen - the black skin, identified with Osiris, symbolises rebirth.

The Pharoah's throne is covered with sheet gold and inlaid with glass and semi precious stones; the wooden throne is supported on spindley lions. The tableau on the chair depicts Tutankhuman's Queen placing her hand on his shoulder, perhaps anointing him with oil. Their robes are beaten silver.
