WilliamsWe have many with the surname WILLIAMS in our tree! This page deals with Rob's great great grandmother's line, Elizabeth Williams who married Thomas Caddy. Thomas Caddy was actually a Williams too, being the son of John Williams, the husband of his mother's sister Elizabeth. That line will be in the Caddy pages, unless it gets out of hand, in which case I shall give it its own page. Just to complicate things further, Thomas' brother - also a Williams/Caddy - married an Eliza Williams!
William Williams & Elizabeth Williams
William Williams. Believed to have been born at Crowan, Cornwall about 1789. Elizabeth Williams was born about 1789, in Somerset. Her actual birthplace varies, Stenton and Over Stowey (as Ovestoy) have been quoted. (It is possible that her maiden name is not Williams, if she was a widow when they married) William and Elizabeth married at Over Stowey, Somerset on the 17th February 1819. A son, William, was baptized at Over Stowey on the 26th December 1919. At the time, William was a miner, living at Castle Hill. The only other Williams entry in the online records for Over Stowey was a burial for Frederic Williams, aged 1, from Frien, buried on the 1st February 1925. 1841 Census: Cornwall, Parish of St Hilary, Marazion, Leans Row. This is likely to be the family, William, aged 50 and Elizabeth aged 55 (rounded ages) Elizabeth's age is reasonably consistent with other years. William is a copper miner. Young William's age is rounded down to 15 - but he is consistently a few years younger than he should be throughout the census years, so it is possible that the baptism in Over Stowey is for an earlier child of the same name. He is correctly shown as a Blacksmith, a journeyman. This 1841 entry shows the whole family as born in Cornwall. Other children shown in the family: John, aged 15, copper miner (born in or before 1826) and James, aged 12 (born 1829) 1851 Census: Marazion, Leans Row. This time, the census at least shows Elizabeth was born Somerset, though Stenton is given as the place. I believe this to be the same couple, especially as they still reside in Leans Row. William is shown as born Crowan, a miner, and aged 62. Again, Elizabeth is older than him, at 64, but not as much as the rounding caused in 1841! No children in this census entry. William Snr has died in between the census years of 1851 and 1861. 1861 Census: Marazion, Lays Lane. Elizabeth is now an 72 year old widow, living with her son William and his family. Her occupation as housekeeper has been crossed out. William and Elizabeth are both recorded as being born in Overtoy or Ovestoy, Somerset. This led me to finding the place as Over Stowey, and finding the online records for the marriages and baptisms. 1871 Census: Elizabeth has not been found. If alive she would be 82.
William (Billy) Williams & Jane Menallack
William (Billy) Williams, the son of William and Elizabeth Williams, was born at Over Stowey, Somerset, and baptized there on the 26th December 1919. William was a blacksmith. Jane Menallack was born on the 8th January 1814, at Tuckingmill, Sithney, Cornwall - appears to be the seventh child of eleven, and sixth daughter, of Thomas Menallack and Margaret Boase. Jane was baptized at Sithney 23rd January, 1814. William and Jane married at the Parish Church in St Hilary, after Banns, on the 23rd November, 1844. Both of full age, Jane gave her mark, William signed, and they both lived at Marazion. William was noted as a Mine-smith; Jane a House-servant. Williams' father was recorded as William Williams, miner; Jane's father as Thomas Menallack, miller. (This is the confirmation I needed to make sure of the census entries that I have found as their families, and that I am following the right lines) The ceremony was performed by Vicar Thomas Pascoe, the witnesses being Caroline Menallack and Honour Williams. I do not know who Honour is, but Caroline is most likely Jane's younger sister. Known Children
1851 - Living at Lays Lane, Marazion, William is a 30 year old blacksmith, born Overston, Somerset. Wife Jane is a year older, born at Tuckingmill. Children: Elizabeth 6, Andrew 4, William 2, and James just 4 months old. 1861 - Still at Lays Lane, Marazion, William is shown as a 39 year old blacksmith. Jane is 42. Children: Elizabeth, unmarried, 16; Andrew 14; William 12; James 10; Thomas 6; and Mary Jane 2. Also in the household is William's widowed mother, Elizabeth aged 72. An occupation given as housekeeper is crossed through. William and Elizabeth's birthplaces are shown as Ovestoy, Somerset - the phonetic spelling of Over Stowey? William died in between the census years of 1861 and 1871, since Jane is shown as a widow in 1871. On daughter Elizabeth's marriage in 1867, it was not indicated that her father was deceased, and there was a William Williams who signed as a witness. One would not expect it to be her 17 year old brother, so perhaps William was still alive to see his daughter married. 1871 - Jane and the other children are now living at Carnarton Street, Camborne. Jane is listed as a widow, 54, and a housekeeper, born Sithney. Andrew 24, William 22, and James 20, are blacksmiths. Thomas, 15, works as a surface miner. Mary Jane, aged 12, is still going to school. Andrew's wife, Christiana is 22. They have a visitor with them on census night, an unmarried Elizabeth J Stanley.
