John Turton & Martha Sykes

John Turton was born about 1795 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He appears to have died between 1871 and 1881 census dates.

Martha Sykes was born 24th April 1798 at Moor Top, Ackworth, Yorkshire, England, and baptized the next day. Martha appears to be the daughter of Richard Sykes and Charlotte Swan.

John and Martha married on the 7th September, 1819, at Ackworth, Yorkshire, England. John was a Surgeon according to daughter's marriage registration in 1854. However baptism records show he was firstly a weaver, then later a labourer and gardener. Mary's uncle Thomas was a surgeon at Ackworth.

I have found six children christened at Ackworth between 1820 and 1837: Charlotte, Joseph, Charles, Ann, Mary and Elizabeth. Emma was born 1841.
