Thomas married Mary ? .

4th Great Grandparents

John Tremethick was baptized 16th June 1782 at Ludgvan, the son of Thomas and Mary.  The surname was recorded as Tremetheack.

Harriot Thomas was baptized 17th June 1783 at Saint Hilary - the daughter of William Thomas and Avice Menkey.  Her name is also recorded with the spelling of Harriet.

John and Harriot married in the Saint Hilary Parish Church, after Banns, on the 14th November 1804.  The ceremony was performed by the Vicar Malachy Hitchins, the witnesses were Joney Williams and Catherine Gasterill(?).  All members of the bridal party gave their signature apart from John who made his mark.

The next 11 years there is a gap in information - with two males which may belong to their family.  [William Thomas has been confirmed]

  • Joel Thomas, baptized  Paul 6th July 1806.  He married Mary Susanna Savage.  I have been told that he is a possible son.
  • William Thomas, born Marazion about 1817.  William was a 23 year old mariner when he married Jane Richards, aged 25, on 28th June 1840 at the Parish Church St Gluvias after banns.  Both recorded as residents of Penryn. William's father is recorded as John Tremethick, Rope Maker. Jane's father is John Richards, Ship Wright.  The bride and groom both gave their mark. The witnesses, John and Richard Richards, both signed their names.  The service was performed by John Sheepshanks, Vicar.

I then have a steady stream of children.  Cousin Alun has sighted the following baptisms (transcripts which begin 1813) at Marazion, where John has the occupation of ropemaker.

  • John - 5th November 1815
  • James - 16th May 1819
  • Edwin - 14th March 1821.  Married Elizabeth Truscott in 1841, emigrated to Victoria, Australia by 1853.  Edwin died March 1888 and is buried in the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery.
  • Isabella - 13th Oct 1822.  Rob's 3rd great Grandmother, married John Caddy.
  • Thomas -  5th July 1825
  • Joseph - 5th March 1826
  • Mary - 14th May 1828.  On the IGI, Wesleyan, Penzance, shows a baptism on 24th January 1828  for a Mary Tremethick, born  29 December 1827, parents John and Harriett.

1841   Harriett, aged 55 (rounded down), and Mary, aged 14, appear living in the same household Fore Street, Marazion.   I have been told that John appears elsewhere in Fore Street.

Harriett was buried Marazion, 8th October, 1848, aged 64.

1851  A John appears in Trevenner, recorded as a widower, aged 68, born Ludgvan.  He is a Copper Mine Labourer.

John was buried Marazion, 22nd February 1853, aged 72.
