Susannah Read Randall
Susannah Read Randall was born 7th January 1827, and
christened 23rd February. We do not yet know the significance of Read as a
middle name, but in 1861 her parents did share the same building with a Read
family.
Thomas Peck was born about 1825 in Dovercourt, eldest child
of Thomas Codd and Priscilla Carter. It seems that sometime during
the 1840s, his father changed the surname from Codd to Peck - which explains why
I could not find them in the 1841 census. I found this enlightening
information of the family history pages of Mark Stevenson.
Susannah and Thomas married at St Nicholas Parish Church, Harwich,
after Banns, on 23rd January 1848. Both, of full age and single, were
unable to sign their names and gave their mark. The fathers were
recorded as Robert Randall, shoe maker, and Thomas Peck, labourer. The
marriage was witnessed by Robert Randall and Eliza Peck. Robert signed,
and Eliza gave her mark.
Known children
- Thomas Peck, born 1st February 1850, bapt 8th
March. Married Annie Kemp 1875, possibly five children. Died 1898.
- Robert Randall Peck, born 29th April 1851, baptized the
next day. Married Jane Ward in 1876, possibly seven children. Died
after 1901 census.
- John Randall Peck, born 17th November 1854, bapt 22nd
December. Appeared in brother Thomas' household in 1881, an unmarried
mariner, aged 28.
- William Peck, born 4th October 1857, bapt 19th
November. Married Clarissa (Clarry) Smith, possibly nine children.
Died aft 1901 census.
- Joseph Randall Peck, born 9th October 1856, bapt 7th
November. He died as an infant.
- Joseph Peck, born 29th May? 1859, bapt 3rd August.
I think I found Joseph in 1891, a lamp lighter on the Tongue Light Vessel,
married, aged 33. No further details as yet. Haven't looked.
- Charles Peck, birth registered 1862, appears aged 8 in
the 1871 census. Not found 1881.
- Eliza, born abt 1864, appears aged 7 in 1871; and aged
17, an unmarried dress maker in 1881 still living at home. In
1897, Eliza may have married Robert Samuel Smith, and was living next
door to her father in the 1901 census. This Eliza R. Smith is the
right age, and born Harwich.
- Sarah A. Peck, birth registered 1866, appears aged 5 in
the 1871 census.
Susannah died, aged 72, during the March quarter
1901.
Thomas died, aged 88, during the December quarter,
1907. This age is some years out, so it needs to be confirmed that
it is the right death.
