Thomas Menallack & Christian Tonken

Thomas Menallack was born about 1738.

Christian Tonken appears to the eldest child of Francis Tonken and Mary Sampson, being baptized on the 29th June 1754 at Sithney.

Thomas and Christian married at Sithney on the 3rd August 1776, the witnesses being Thomas Tonken and William Pascoe.

Known children:

  1. Barely two months later Thomas Menallack was baptized, also at Sithney, 16th October 1776.  Thomas is Rob's 4th great grandfather, more information about his family below.
  2. Francis Tonken Menallack was baptized 21st July 1779, and was buried the next year, 1780, on the 4th of May.
  3. Richard Menallack - possible child of Thomas and Christian.  He was living in Tuckingmill when he died, and shows in the Sithney burial register as 50 years old and buried 11th May 1832.  He was born about 1782.

Christian died 25th October 1783 aged only 30 years old - Many thanks goes to the person who made a message board post recording the inscription on her grave stone in the Sithney churchyard.

IN /MEMORY /OF/Christian the Wife of/Thos. Manallack/who died 25th Oct, 1783
aged 30
My tender husband & my Children dear
Mourn not for me who now be sleeping here
but hope in time that God will me arise
To dwell with him in bliss in Paradise

Thomas died, age recorded as 76, at Trannock, appearing in the Sithney burial register  16th January 1814.    I do not know if he remarried, I have not looked.

Thomas Menallack & Margaret Boase

Thomas Menallack - baptized Sithney on the 16th October 1776, the first child of Thomas Menallack and Christian Tonken.

Margaret Boase  - according to a later census, was born about 1778 at Scily Island, Cornwall.

Thomas and Margaret married 3rd December 1803 at Paul.   Thomas was a Miller.

Known children:

  1. Christian - baptized Sithney, 18th March 1804.  Christian had a child with Thomas Treloar in 1831.  In 1833 she married James Richards.  Christian died, aged 57, and was buried on 31st May 1861.
  2. Mary - baptized Sithney, 18th August 1805.  Married Joseph Richards 1838.
  3. Amy -  baptized Sithney, 8th June 1807.  Married  John Pearce in the September quarter 1842 .  Buried 26th January 1868 at Penzance, aged 59.
  4. Thomas  - baptized Sithney, 6th November 1808.  Married Mary Ivey at Sithney 21st October 1832.  Thomas, Mary and seven children ranging in age from 4 to 19, arrived in Australia in January 1849.  They came as Assisted Emigrants on the ship Lysander, recorded as Mannalick.   Thomas died in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia, in 1891, with his parents correctly named on his death certificate, his age given as 81 years.   He married Maria Goodman in June 1852 at Melbourne.  He built the Cornish Arms Hotel in Brunswick and held the licence from 1857 until his death.
  5. Margaret  - baptized Sithney, 3rd June 1810
  6. Elizabeth - born 3rd January 1812, baptized 19th January at Sithney.  It does not appear that Elizabeth married - if it is her buried in Sithney, 19th November 1832 - aged 21, from Tuckingmill.
  7. Jane Menallack - born 8th January 1814, baptized 23rd January at Sithney.  Jane married William Williams and they are Rob's 3rd great grandparents, more information on this family on the Williams page.  Jane's eldest child, Elizabeth,  emigrated to New Zealand shortly after marriage to Thomas Tremethick Caddy , but then they moved on to Australia.
  8. Isabella Menallack - born 7th January 1812 at Tuckingmill, baptized 18th January.
  9. Caroline Menallack - born 16th April 1818 at Tuckingmill, baptized 3rd May.
  10. Francis Menallack - born Sithney, baptized 8th April 1821.    At some stage Francis emigrated to Australia.  He died in Bendigo, Victoria in 1886, his parents recorded in the death index as Thomas Manallack and Margaret Bouse.  I do not have this death certificate (though I do have a nagging feeling that I could actually have it but not 'processed' it).  He may have married Ellen McKelvie, but not in Victoria or South Australia.
  11. Burrita Menallack - born Tuckingmill, baptized 4th January 1824, transcribed as Burreta, spellings vary on many documents.   Burrita married John Bosanko in 1846.  From unassisted emigrant indexes, it appears that John and Burrita, now in their mid-sixties, together with A. Bosanko (probably Anne), arrived in Victoria, Australia on the ship Garonne in November 1887.  They were closely followed by more of their adult family on the ship Ormuz, arriving March 1888.   It appears that their son John Bosanko may then have married his first cousin, Ellen Manallack, daughter of Burita's brother, Thomas, and his second wife Maria.

1841  - living at Trethanack, Sithney.  Thomas shown as a Miller, aged 65, Margret aged 60.  Francis is the only child shown as living at home, employed as a miner, his age rounded down to 15, he must have thought that he was not yet 20.

1851 - living at Tuckingmill, Sithney.  Thomas, a Miller, aged 77.  Margret is 71, and living with them, they have a 16 year old General Servant, Mary Jane Richards.

Margaret died at Tuckingmill, her age recorded as 75 years, buried 23rd October 1853.

1861 - Thomas was living with daughter Burrita in Trennack, Sithney - shown as the 88 year old father-in-law of John Bosanko.

Thomas died age recorded as 90 years, buried Sithney 10th April 1864.
