McKay

Sutherland, Scotland

5th Great Grandparents

I have not verified any of this information by viewing any registers myself.

John MacKay:   An entry on the IGI, submitted by Joyce Parsons, has John born about 1750 'of' Portchamil, Durness, Sutherland - the son of Hugh Mackay.  John's occupation is given as Boveman-Farmer.  The same entry also suggests that he died at Sartigrim, Durness, but a date is not mentioned.   From elsewhere in the LDS records, I have been told that the John who married Mary Campbell is recorded as a Boveman-Farmer, the son of William Mor MacRobert Mackay.  However, his alias is usually given as MacDholicustian, or phonetic approximates.  Hustian, the Gaelic Uisdean, pronounced oosh-jan means Hugh.

Mary Campbell:  Joyce Parsons also suggests that Mary Campbell was born about 1770, and was from Craigiemhulin, Durness, Sutherland, Scotland.  It is possible that Joyce's suggested places are actually the abodes at time of marriage.

John and Mary married at Durness, Sutherland.  Two entries appear in the IGI - one is dated 17 December 1786 with the place as Fairly, Durness (submitted by a member of the LDS).  This may actually be a Banns entry in the register.  The other IGI entry is extracted from the Durness Parish Register and quotes the date of marriage as 22 December, 1786.

These are the possible children from entries in the Durness Parish registers (transcripts, IGI and 'other' sources).

  1. William - 3rd June 1788: John was recorded as a Tenent in Port Chamil.
  2. Flora - 15th February 1790: John, a Boveman in Balnaciell. Flora was known as Flory when she married Ewan McMillan in 1815.   At this time, her father John was recorded as a Miller in Durin.
  3. Hugh - 8th May 1792: John, a Boveman in Balnaciell.
  4. Alexander - 6th October 1793: John noted as a Herman in Balnaciell.
  5. Margaret - 21st September 1795: John noted as a little Tenent in Sartigrim. Margaret married John Grant, a Gaelic Teacher, 29 April 1816, at Durin. The marriage appears on the same page in the register as the marriage of her sister Flora/Flory.  Margaret's father is recorded as John Mackay alias M'Oilicuhustian Miller Durin.
  6. Marion - 20th March 1797: John recorded as a farmer in Sartigrim.
  7. Erick.? - 20th September 1797: a daughter, in Sartigrim.
  8. Donald - 4th October 1799: son of John MacKAY or MacDholicustian,  a Wright and Farmer in Saitigrim, and Mary CAMPBELL from Strath Melness.  It is possible that this is the Donald who emigrated from the Isle of Muck to what is now Nova Scotia, about 1824.  If so, he married Jessie McDonald of the Isle of Mull, daughter of Alexander MacDonald and Mary McLean who also emigrated to Cape Breton. (info from a gg grandson)
