Lock

To Australia, via the Channel islands, from Bath, Somerset, England

Samuel Lock & Sarah Perkins

Samuel Lock born about 1801 in England. Occupation: Tailor

Sarah Perkins born England about 1803

Samuel and Sarah married by Banns at St Swithin's Church, Parish of Walcot, Somerset on the 10th July 1822. They were both single, and of that parish. Both signed their names. The witnesses were henry Stillman and William Matraving (query on that surname!)

It appears that the family had moved to Guernsey, Channel Islands by 1829. In the 1841 census they are living at St Peter Port at Glatney Esplanade. Samuel is still working at his trade as a tailor, now shown as aged 40. Sarah is noted as 38, both born England. Only the eldest two children are shown with occupations, John now 18 was a Moulder, and Elizabeth was a Dress Maker.

Children born England: John (1823); Elizabeth (1825); Francis (1827)

Children born Guernsey: Salina (1829); Samuel (1831); George (1833); Emily (1835); Eliza (1837); Frederick (1839); and Harriet (1842)

Then we lose sight of Samuel and Sarah. In the 1851 census John has married Hannah, and at the same address, but noted as a different household, are Samuel, George, Emily, Eliza, Frederick and Harriet - the younger three still at school.

Elizabeth had married in 1847 and emigrated to Australia in 1849. It appears that her father Samuel had died before 1856, as when Elizabeth's husband drew up his will he mentions Sarah, the widow of Samuel Lock.
