JefferyLamberhurst and Brenchley, Kent, England
Thomass Jeofrey & Rachel Baldwin
Thomass Jeofrey and Rachel Baldwin married 16th May 1758 at Lamberhurst, Kent. (IGI) Recorded in the Phillimore Parish Records Volume 111, page 135 as Thomas Jeffery and Rachel Baldwin. Known children (with baptism dates)
I do not yet know when Thomas died. Rachel died, and was buried 23rd February 1824, a widow, aged 89. This gives her a birth year of about 1735.
Edward Jeffery & Lydia Hickmott
Edward Jeffery was baptized 29th December 1765 at Lamberhurst, the son of Thomas Jeffery and Rachel Baldwin. Lydia Hickmott was baptized 9th May 773 at Lamberhurst, the daughter of James Hickmott and Mary, and the youngest of six known children. Edward and Lydia married at the Brenchley Parish Church on 17th November 1790. Children (with baptism dates)
Lydia died about six months after William was baptized, being buried at Brenchley 2nd November 1808. I do not know if Edward remarried. He would have been about 43 years old when widowed. The older girls probably helped to raise the younger children. The eldest, James, would have been at least 17 years old when Lydia died. The family seems to have remained a tight knit group, as 33 years later they all still lived side by side in Sandhole. In 1838, the family would have had to say goodbye to William's family as they emigrated from England to start a new life in Australia. Other members of the family may have followed, or gone before. 1841 finds Edward living in Sandhole, Brenchley, recorded as 75 year old agricultural labourer. Living in the same household is his married daughter Alice Dartnall, her husband John and four of their children. Living next door is Alice's brother, John, his wife Elizabeth and six children. The next house has Harriet Jeffery with two children. Harriet is the wife of Thomas who is not home census night. Then, there is yet another Jeffery household - James, with his second wife Ann and seven children. Edward died, and was buried at Brenchley cemetery, 3rd June 1849, his age recorded as 87.
William Jeffery & Mary Ann Martin
William Jeffery was born* 6th April 1808 at Brenchley, and baptized 5th June - the youngest child of nine, to Edward Jeffery and Lydia Hickmott. William's mother died around six months later, so little William would not have had a mother unless his father remarried. Mary Ann Martin was born* 10th August 1810 at Goudhurst, Kent, the daughter of William Martin and Elizabeth Mailliard. * dates of birth from shipping information (Kevin) William and Mary married 1st September 1828 at Lamberhurst. Children born in Kent, England, baptized at Brenchley.
1838 Emigration - William and Mary Ann and the two surviving girls emigrated from England. The barque Lady Nugent sailed from Gravesend, with 134 adults and 104 children on board arriving at Sydney, Australia, on 27th November 1838. The journey lasted 124 days, with the usual seasickness in the early days. Diarrhoea was also common. There were four births and two deaths on the voyage. The surgeon reported that all passengers landed in excellent health. Children born New South Wales, Australia.
25th June 1848, Charles and Martha were baptized. The family were living at Lachlan River and William's occupation was a Squatter. William died between 1850 and 1857. A little confusion reigns as to the death date, as the later date is recorded on the probate as date of death, yet a registration or burial record cannot be found. [Since there are the baptisms with the surname JEFFERS, there is a possible death for William in 1850, as William Jeffers. However, the age is way out at 53 years old. I have not investigated this death - and being pre civil registration, it may not help] Mary married John Murray on 8th September 1863, at the St Michael and St John Catholic Church at Bathurst. John, a farmer from Ploughmans Creek, was a 48 year old widower, originally from County Mayo in Ireland. John's parents were recorded as Edward Murray and Ellen Welsh. Mary's age was given as 50, her parents recorded as William (surname not recorded) and Eliza Mellion. Mary's residence was also Ploughmans Creek. The ceremony was performed by Thomas S. Leonard, the witnesses James and Mary Kelly. Mary died at Orange, from ovarian cancer, on the 29th April 1876, aged 65. Mary was buried at the Orange cemetery a few days later, on the 1st of May. Her funeral service was conducted by the Roman Catholic Minister T. J. Walsh.
