Here's what people have said in response to the ideas put expressed in these pages.
No offence, people, but English criticism and English theory has really gone over the edge this time. Please, spare yourself this humiliation and abort this website. Cordelia is NOT the Fool. I personally guarantee it!

If Cordelia was the fool, would it not contradict the plot of the play? Part of the theme of the fool was to show the conflicting moralities choices that exist in intellectual's human beings. To choose to follow Edmund (rational) or to follow Lear (irrational) out of loyality. The subject becomes merely not valid if Cordelia was the fool, then Cordelia (fool) chose out the bond (between father and daughter).

If Cordelia was the fool, would it not contradict with the plot of the play? I believe part of the theme about fool was the conflicting moralities of the intellectual human being's decisions. To choose reason rational and follow Edmund or irrational be loyal to follow Lear. If Cordelia was the fool then she merely followed his father because of the bond between father and daughter and no more...

I just wanted to thank you for your web page. It has been a great help in the last few days while reading King Lear. It helped make the play much clearer and helped me enjoy the play much more than I would have had your notes not been available.
Thanks again,
Graham Webster
the authors have perhaps forgotten that lear did know his fool before banishing Cordelia and was very fond of him "my+fool" where is my fool? " if your argument is the case, why did shakespeare not introduce us to the fool as he introduced all the dissembling characters? edgar kent and edmund.

I just want to thank you for this site. In my 11th grade honors English class we are reading this play, and until I found your site I understood none of it. Now, thanks to you, I think I have a pretty solid understanding of the play. THANKS.

I have some questions about the book....see if you can help me out... what purpose does the Glouchester subplot serve? Is Edgar a plausible character? why does he maintain his disguise for so long? What part does devine intervention play? Is there a God or gods? see if you can answer these.... if so I might have some more good ones for you thanks

I need to find different theories on why the fool disappears and the purpose of the character.

Edmund, not Edgar, disguises himself as Poor Tom.

If anyone is really into Shakespeare and happens to be in Bradford, England on the 27/28/29 November please come and see The Comedy of Errors. We (The University Theatre Group - BUTG) are performing it as a piece of physical theatre and it is gonna be FAB! Our web site can be found by looking at the University's home page and going to Arts or by searching under Theatre in the Mill. Bye!
