Edmund and Regan enter with their
troops. Concerned at Albany's lack of decisiveness, Edmund sends an officer to see if Albany still wants to fight the French.
Regan professes her love for Edmund. She enquires whether Oswald has reached Edmund, suggesting that he has miscarried. She jealously questions him about his relationship with Goneril and Edmund swears that he doesn't have any affection for Goneril.
Regan tells Edmund not to become familiar with Goneril, and Edmund assures her he won't, just as Goneril and Albany enter with their soldiers.
Seeing Edmund with her sister, Goneril ruminates on how she would rather lose the battle than have Edmund with Regan.
Albany makes it clear that he's
not fighting against Lear and his cause, but the foreign invaders. Towards that end they all are ready to put aside their individual differences. Edmund will join Albany in a meeting with their military advisors.
Albany remained behind, and is met by Edgar (disguised as a peasant) who gives him Goneril's letter to Edmund.
Edgar asks Albany to read it before
the battle, and promises to return, if summoned,
if Albany defeats the French.
Edmund returns and reports that the enemy's
army is close. Albany assures Edmund that he will be ready.
Edmund isn't sure which sister he wants to marry. He can have either. He proposes that once the British troops defeat the French, Lear and Cordelia will be killed, and Goneril can get rid of Albany, leaving the throne for him.
